Talking with top Barack Obama adviser David Axelrod this past Sunday on his show, host David Gregory pushed back against arguments that the wealthy should pay their fair share of taxes.
“[I]f you really want shared sacrifice, then the middle class should pay taxes, too. I mean, roll back the Bush tax cuts for everybody rather than looking at the, you know, just having the rich pay more,” Gregory argued. “If it’s shared sacrifice, why not say to everybody, everybody’s going to have to do with less in terms of a social safety net, in terms of taxes and all the rest.”
Who is this “everybody” that Gregory is talking about? It’s not himself, obviously. Or the people he hangs out with at his D.C. cocktail parties.
I love talk of "shared" sacrifice by well-heeled assholes who have forgotten what it's like to sweat their finances. Because nothing says "I'm sharing in your pain" like fighting efforts to repair our nation's debt by having those who can actually afford it carry the load, while pretending that no one else is "sacrificing."
We see this with the well-compensated media elite, we obviously see it with the selfish-asshole segment of the one percent. And, of course, we see it with dumbass teabaggers who don't know any better.
Note, all of these groups cheered on tax cuts the nation couldn't afford, and wars the nation couldn't afford, and stealth bombers and nuclear submarines the nation couldn't afford, and an austerity program the nation couldn't afford (the unemployed don't buy stuff or pay taxes).
And while the teabaggers have actually suffered under recent economic policy (and are simply too stupid to realize why), the elites certainly haven't. And they're going to come talk to the rest of us about "sacrifice"? You know how they can share in the sacrifice everyone else is already feeling? By paying more in fucking taxes. That still won't even things out. The squeezed middle class still has to worry about making mortgage payments and buying groceries and putting off needed car repairs while Mitt Romneybot, David Gregory, and their pals never will. But, at least it'll be something. Because right now, it's nothing but good times for those assholes.
