Yes, I was glad to hear the news that the big PINK fraud blinked. Really, how could they not? It was all so obvious, a moron (or moran) could have understood it. I'm ashamed to admit that I ran races "for the cure" before I ever developed a political and informed bone in my body. Waaaayyyy before...
I worked, as a surgical nurse, with a lot of docs who were into fitness, racing, running, "thising and thating". Eventually that stuff wears off on a body and you feel remiss if you don't "this or that". So I did.
I had back surgery, a microdiskectomy at L5S1, in 1998, and was told by the neurosurgeon that I could run no more than 2 miles. I chuckled to myself thinking, "I've never run one mile, much less two". A "Race For The Cure" was coming up in my area and some work buds and I decided to train for it. It was a 5K, no biggie unless you have NEVER run in your life except when you were a little kid playing tag. So I trained with them and on my own.
Race day: I'm ready, pumped, wearing my bib stating who I'm "honoring" and "remembering". These folks were and still are some very important people in my life. I wanted to get it right, to do well, and to remember to breathe during my first ever race in my entire life. I did it! I ran, I finished, I remembered and honored! My aunt, my deceased brother's girlfriend, others who I wanted to remember and honor. And I felt so good about this effort that I ran again and again. "For the Cure".
Now I know its a load of crap. The Komen people are a corporation, for profit. Also, they are Repubs, and we know they don't really care. We know for certain where their monies were spent, its all out there.
So they upped the ante and declared PP a pariah. And then the house of cards fell down. I for one love it! I can't run anymore, my knees scream bloody murder when I try now, at age 60. At the same time, they aren't running so well anymore either. Not because their joints scream, but because their donors have been shown the light. A light that casts them in a horrible place, a place of truth they have tried to avoid. And in so doing they have desecrated the namesake, Susan G. Komen, dead of cancer, the sister of the CEO Nancy Brinker, who has used her dead sister's disease and memory to create a business for herself, her gain, her politics.
I have long since run my last 5K, Run for the Cure. I think this PINK organization has too, but for a whole host of worse reasons than tired knees.
