I'm torn. I'm torn on Operation Hilarity. I'm torn for a couple of reasons. First, there's the down ticket races. If there is a contested Democratic primary for down ticket and local races, it is our responsibility to select the BEST and MOST PROGRESSIVE candidate possible to run in the general. And that would preclude voting for any Republican. In my case, I'd love to vote for Mourdock over Lugar, which would give Donnelly a chance to win the IN Senate seat. It's about the only thing I can do, since Santorum didn't make it on to the ballot. But I don't know who's running in the primaries yet. My representative was one of the legislators who walked out in the spring and I want to reward her with my vote.
Anyway, secondly, and most importantly, Operation Hilarity can have one big big unintended consequence we have not foreseen: Romney winning.
Think about it: Once word gets out into the Wingnuttoshpere about this, heads will explode. Especially when it gets out that we will be voting for Santorum just to make Romney lose. This may actually galvanize support around ROMNEY, as the reflex is that anything we do is bad, and so they must do the opposite.
The bloviating on Fox News writes itself. And look for the nutjobs on Hate Radio to rally support for Romney as well.
This will give them the excuse they've been looking for to support him. Rachel showed a graphic of Romney's favorables plummeting last night. Operation Hilarity could have the unintended consequence of spiking them in the other direction as conservatives rally around him because of "Democrat bullies".
So who's right and who's wrong?
I don't know.
I'm torn.
