So said Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, Rev. Michael Ellick, Minister of Judson Memorial Church in New York, NY, a leader in the Occupy Wall Street movement, and other religious leaders from Faithful America, as they delivered 20,000 signatures to MSNBC.
Rev. Michael Ellick, Minister of Judson Memorial Church in New York, NY, and a leader in the Occupy Wall Street movement said, “If MSNBC continues to have this on the air, they’re discrediting themselves, discrediting their viewers, and discrediting the Christian faith.”
Other faith leaders at the event spoke about the implications of providing a high-profile platform to bigoted voices.
“Our concern is this—when one voice is portrayed to be the voice of Christianity and that voice is a voice of hatred and gay-bashing and discrimination, what that does is give the culture permission, ‘God blessed’ permission to bash and malign gay people,” said Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Senior Minister of Middle Collegiate Church in New York, NY.

All they were asking is that MSNBC stop giving a platform to a hate group. This hate group.

The Family Research Council (FRC) bills itself as “the leading voice for the family in our nation’s halls of power,” but its real specialty is defaming gays and lesbians. The FRC often makes false claims about the LGBT community based on discredited research and junk science. The intention is to denigrate LGBT people in its battles against same-sex marriage, hate crimes laws, anti-bullying programs and the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
To make the case that the LGBT community is a threat to American society, FRC employs a number of “policy experts” whose “research” has allowed FRC to be extremely active politically in shaping public debate. Its research fellows and leaders often testify before Congress and appear in the mainstream media. It also works at the grassroots level, conducting outreach to pastors in an effort to “transform the culture.”

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, has appeared on MSNBC 22 times since the Southern Poverty Law Center declared them a hate group in November 2010.
22 times to spew his homophobic lies equating homosexuality with child sexual abuse. 22 times to legitimize hatred of our gay sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. 22 times spent spewing poisoned words that can help lead another gay child to commit suicide, or that can validate the murder of a gay friend or neighbor.
And so far, MSNBC has said nothing in response to the petitions dropped off by Bishop Robinson and others. Nothing. Want to help change that?
Faithful America is raising money so they can run this ad on MSNBC's own networks. I think it deserves our support. What about you?
MSNBC should know better. It's past time we reminded them why.
