Firs off, Itzl is OK, and he's going to be OK, but that wasn't the case for a little while last night.
At 3:00 am, he was supposed to receive a dose of really strong pain meds. A vet tech gave him the dosage and was on her way back to mark it on his chart when she got distracted by another issue. A different vet tech, seeing that Itzl's chart didn't indicate he'd received his pain meds, marked it on the chart adn then gave him a second dosage. Fortunetely, the first vet tech saw her giving the second dose - not in time to stop her, but in time to start immediate rescue and to c all the surgeon and the on-duty vet.
It was touch-and-go for a while, and the vet thinks they reacted soon enough that he should take no lasting harm from this.
He will have to stay in ICU until Tuesday to receive the binder and activated charcoal and get his blood purified and his system cleaned of the drug. He will have to be closely watched for a long time to make sure he didn't get long term hurt from this.
But he's going to be OK. He was much more alert and in less pain. He even was able to stand up by himself and pee on his own. He's getting better.
I taught the staff how to give him his stand down signal when he alerts on sounds. He won't listen to them, of course, but it will make them feel better.
I have pics, but he's refusung the vet's food so I have to cook him some lunch real quick and go back to the vet. There's no time to upload hte pictures since the broadband connection I borrowed didn't pan out after all.
Y'all take care and I'll be back 6 or 8 hours, when I have to tend Xoco's needs and cook Itzl's supper.
