Quick! Check your calendar...did you know that today really isn't President's Day...and that to call it that is all a plot by the liberals to honor all presidents instead of just George Washington?
Our friends over in Red State can find bogie men hiding behind every event and circumstance, apparently!
Daniel Horowitz educates us as to the real meaning of the day:
Many of us are off of work today, but are unaware of the true origin of this holiday. Indeed, today is not Presidents’ Day; it is the legal holiday to celebrate George Washington’s birthday (his actual birthday is Wednesday). Washington’s Birthday has been usurped by liberals (and marketers), as it has been morphed into a generic celebration of all American presidents.
He gives the history: Congress changed Washington's birthday to make it a Monday holiday back in 1968 (I was 11, I don't remember any public outcry against this travesty!). Obviously there was an ulterior motive behind the "Uniform Monday Holidays Act:"
There is actually deep meaning behind the name change. Liberals garner antipathy for our Founding Fathers. At best, they view our founding president with no higher regard than other more uninspiring presidents. Thus, in their mind, George Washington was no greater than Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Jimmy Carter…and Barack Obama! In fact, they think these presidents were much greater than our first president.
I'm not sure where his information comes from that liberals are anti-Founding Father. My only gripe concerning the Founding Fathers is really with the people who "mis-remember" what they were attempting to do as they created a new kind of country from scratch. Oh...and I really wish they had been able to look into the future to write a Constitution which more clearly dealt with our 21st century issues instead of spending all that time talking about slaves being 3/5ths persons, having a strong local militia and not letting soldiers be billeted in private people's homes...but then, apparently, they didn't have access to either a crystal ball or a time machine.
But, this conservative thinker then puts words in the mouths of all liberals in rating the importance of presidents who later followed in Washington's footsteps. Hey, there have been some clinkers...with varying political affiliations. I'm a proud Vermonter, which means I probably regard Calvin Coolidge with more affection than others might...even though he was a product of "Rock Rib Republicanism." Not every Commander in Chief has lived up to George Washington's reputation.
But to slam all liberal thinking people for celebrating more than just Washington's birthday on this President's day is a bit harsh. He manages, of course, to get in a couple of slams at Barack Obama on this day through his wife, Michelle:
As the wife of the current occupant of the office enjoys a lavish vacation on this day,
(I'm not aware of where Michelle is today...but lavish might be a bit of hyperbole) but obviously, this guy doesn't have to have any real reason to run her down:
Today, Michelle Obama wrote on twitter “Happy President’s Day to my personal favorite, BarackObama.” No, Michelle, it’s not your day; it’s a day to celebrate the legacy of George Washington – the man whose traditions and values you have repudiated.
I happen to like the idea of celebrating all of our presidents on this day...despite the use of the weekend to sell mattresses and cars. I'm not sure we can blame liberals for that, though!
