A message to all quitters: you don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as "practice" for the real quit.
This is my first GUS diary and I've put it together pretty quickly. I've been wanting to do a diary for a while as I appreciated having this place when I quit. It was very supportive to be with others that knew what I was going through. I had always thought that my first diary would be about my smoking years and then quitting two years ago. I'll have to do that diary another time. I am not able to commit to a certain time each week so will post occassionally when I see that no one else is scheduled.
I recently went to the New Britain Museum of American Art located in New Britain, Connecticut. Some friends had attended an event there over the Christmas holidays and one bought me a membership for $20 as a gift. I was on my way to Trader Joe's on Sunday and a friend and I decided to check it out for a few minutes. I was surprised that with my membership, there was not an entrance fee.
It really is a beautiful museum where you are greeted with a Dale Chihuly chandelier entitled “Blue and Beyond Blue.”
The museum was celebrating Black History Month with a music and dancing concert. A wine and cheese reception was going on in a different part of the building for the opening of a new artist. I got a glass of white wine and you were allowed to walk around the museum with your glass.
Almost immediately, I ran across this painting of Navy members on leave inside a bar of some port. My photograph only shows about half of it. All of a sudden my association with alcohol and cigarettes went off.
I went further down the hall and ran across this painting. Again the alcohol and cigarette alarm. I was never much of a drinker but when I had one I always smoked. I use to enjoy beer on the weekends but since I quit smoking, I have also quit beer. I do drink wine with others when it is availabe. Anyway, this day I didn't finish my wine and threw it in a trash can.
The music and dancing were great and I enjoyed a lot of the art work.
After about thirty minutes, I needed to leave to get to Trader Joe's before it closed. This old painting below still sticks with me. I love the colors and a feeling of isolation and coldness. Yet there are many boats very close to each other so I'm not sure if they are fishing next to an iceberg?
Anyway, I cannot wait to get back soon and enjoy a slow walk around.

Help!! As you can see, we still have a bunch of open slots on the schedule. If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting! Not sure where to start? Go here to find out how to write a GUS diary the easy way, or just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too.
