As if you needed any more proof that the Republican presidential primary has come down to a mad dash to the extreme right, check out Rick Santorum's newest attack ad against Mitt Romney, featuring nothing but quotes from and about Romney's heretical past:
When Rick Santorum is panicked about being outflanked on his right, you know the GOP has gone completely off the rails, but that's where things are. To give you a sense of just how far off the rails things have gone,
last night you saw Mitt Romney attack Santorum for supporting funding for contraception. Yes, you read that right. Mitt Romney accused the very same Rick Santorum who pledged to be the first president to speak out against birth control ... of being too liberal on birth control. Not to be outdone, Ron Paul then accused Santorum of having "literally voted for abortions." The next thing you know, these guys will accuse Santorum of being too soft on gay rights.
It's amazing how far inside the bubble these guys have gone. They aren't talking to regular Americans any more: they're talking to a rabid Republican base, splitting every last hair in a desperate to be seen as further right than their rivals. And if you watched President Obama's new ad criticizing each of the Republicans for opposing the auto bailout ...
... you realize they are fighting an unwinnable battle against each other, because from the outside, they all look the same.
