I know I know. Some have themselves totally convinced that the Harpercons in Canada are moderate-democrat like creatures from the Great white north, even with the "Conservative" tag.
Despite all the scandals, secretiveness, despite the environmental destruction and muzzling of scientists, the authoritarian like stuff etc. This link tells a story of the connections that the HarperCons have to the "Ethical Oil Echo Chamber".
I guess we look too boring next to the GOP race to the bottom.....But incrementally, it is happening. And since that last election and the fact that they have a majority and a rubber stamp senate, it is speeding up.
We were just in the midst of a current hoopla about Vic Toews statement saying anyone who thinks his spying on Canadians bill is really bad for Canadians is standing with child pornographers and then the revelations that he doesn't even know what is in the gawddamned thing...... (Problems with Bill C-30 explained here. )
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says he is surprised to learn that a section of the government's online surveillance bill provides for "exceptional circumstances" under which "any police officer" can request customer information from a telecommunications service provider.
In an interview airing Saturday on CBC Radio's The House, Toews said his understanding of the bill is that police can only request information from the ISPs where they are conducting "a specific criminal investigation."
This BTW, was the same Government who killed
the long form census because they said it was an invasion of privacy to list how many bathrooms one has, and the long gun registry because they said it was too personal. But again, it is OK to spy on us, and have us pay for it.
Vic has been the object of the attention of many twitter-ers recently, I love this explanation here of how this all happened.
But this week we now have a full blown brouhaha about robocalls during the last election that misdirected voters to the wrong polling stations, and also harassed people at all hours with more calls that were pretending to be from the Liberal party.
See, the Conservatives hold the majority by 14 seats (ridings), and it now appears that these calls happened in 34 68 ridings.
Some races were pretty darned close as it is. One can imagine if many didn't vote or went to the wrong place and then gave up it could mean a few seats. Some seats had massive shifts in the numbers for each party.
We cannot know how it may have changed the results at this point. The main thing and the only thing that is really important, is that this was even going on.
No matter what, this cannot stand. And if it's at all true, the Harpercons should wander the wilderness for a few decades to learn that lesson. Much like the Liberal party has been doing because of the sponsorship scandal.
You all know how this goes in the US,the Republicans like these kinds of games. It helps them to "win". Of course it is dishonest, and completely against the spirit of democracy, but those items are not exactly important to them anyway.
It's all about getting into office so much destruction can be wrought in the meanwhile.
Robocon is not the first time the Harpercons have tried to subvert democracy, the bloggers (like me) have been documenting, even if the corporate media has the attention span of a gnat.
Dammit Janet documents those who were following this last year right around the election.
I posted today about some other things that went on in the 2008 election, here in BC.
A good laundry list of Conservative dirty tricks can be found here.
No matter what, this should be indicative of what the Harper Conservatives really are. Let us hope that Canadians finally send them to the woodshed. There are fines and jail time for Voter Suppression activities. In some extreme cases, parties could be disbanded.
Still think Stephen Harper and his party are "moderates"?
I have this bridge to sell you.......
Oh, and BTW, the party that wasn't going to re-open the abortion debate, is now re-opening the abortion debate. Do keep in mind that none of the Conservative MP's do too much without approval from the PMO. (Prime Ministers Office)
