A news article states that Sandusky's lawyer has requested that a "bill of particulars" be released publicly, with information related to the timeline, locations and age spans of the alleged victims.

Amendola "intends to pick apart the prosecution’s case and prove his [Sandusky's] innocence."

The time line spans 13 years, involving 8 identified (alleged) victims, whose ages ranged from age 8 - 17 over the course of the abuse.  This shows how the grooming process occurs over a long period of time.  This isn't a "one and done" type of crime.  There is no violence, at least not in the beginning.  Grooming is a very caring, loving, affectionate process.  A way to gain the trust of the child - showering them with attention, which is all most kids want anyway.  To be seen, to be loved, to be.

Victim 1 - 3 years
Victim 2 - alleged shower incident - McQueary testimony - still not identified
Victim 3 - 2 years
Victim 4 - 5 years
Victim 5 - 4 years
Victim 6 - 1 reported incident
Victim 7 - 3 years
Victim 8 - alleged shower incident - Janitor's report to supervisor - still not identified
Victim 9 - 2-3 years
Victim 10 - 2 years

You will also note that these dates overlap.  In other words, he was abusing more than one child at a time (allegedly).  And these are only the cases we "know" about.

Statistics tell us that pedophiles, over the course of their lifetime, will abuse hundreds of children.  And Sandusky apparently has been abusing children for a very long time (allegedly).

Specific details from the "bill of particulars" and link to article after the jump -

Tree Climbers is a community diary series for survivors of childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and those who support them.

Tree Climbers sustain each other, learn about childhood abuse, recover, and discover and create ways to protect children.

Trigger Warning - The next paragraph holds brutal words. Feel free to scroll past it.

In a typical diary, you might read of someone who survived the grooming (this does not mean hair brushing), the fondlings, the rapings, the beatings, the mutilations or the death threats perpetrated by a sadistic egocentric molester of an innocent. Criminals abuse their victims. For years. Families refuse to believe the victims. For years. Victims report being dead inside. For years. Families and society have stifled the voices of victims and magnified and perpetuated the abuse. For years. We weep. We rage. We heal. We inspire.

We invite you to climb or be lifted up in our safe tree with us. We have broad branches, sunshine, hammocks, cushions, and plenty of tissues. Comment on the diary, ask questions, and share your perspective or even your story. If you are too overwhelmed to speak, you can just witness. That's okay. A few of the Tree Climbers are as silent as a jury.

Tree Climbers Rule: Be kind.

No  T r o l l s. When we were children, we had no power. But we are no longer children. Climbing trees is not healthy for trolls - everybody knows that. If you act like a troll in our tree, we will calmly watch while you become invisible.

6:40 AM PT: I just caught Sara Ganim (journalist who "broke" the case) on CNN discussing alleged coverup at Penn State - implying there were pay-offs and misappropriation of funds to keep witnesses silent.

Of course all of this is alleged - but many have discredited Ms. Ganim's reporting because she comes from a small publication.  I found it interesting that main stream media was picking up the case and reporting on this allegation against Penn State - to me that gives it a bit more legs - what are your thoughts?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Thanks Roxine (6+ / 0-)

I just read that article too, and immediately came to DKos Tree Climbers to see if anyone was discussing Sandusky and this case. You know I have to tell you, I usually do not read this kind of news story -- I look away. Actually that is my reaction to almost all news that focuses on violence or abuse or ... whatever horror is currently under the spotlight. I learned to do this years ago, I think as a survival instinct... it was crushing me, making me afraid to venture into the world, making me full of despair and hopelessness and I was trying to learn how to want to live and I had to look away from it all. I had to learn to focus on how to be whole, happy, healthy... for me. It was imperative at a point for me to do that, or I most likely would not even still be here today.

I am slowly trying now to break that habit of looking away. It is hard. I feel depressed -- and angry -- (alternating) from reading about this. I feel depressed and angry from even thinking about it. This is what makes it so hard to do this. Self-preservation tactics long ingrained... stop looking at things that I can't handle focusing on. Or that are not healthy things for me to focus on, because they drag me down... back down the rabbit hole as I used to call it. See, it's been years now since I even noticed the opening to the rabbit hole. I had almost completely covered it over and forgotten it was even there.

But I see it now. It's there and it still leads to a deep dark place where I don't want to go, emotionally speaking. I am trying to see if I can learn to how to bear witness to this without falling in. But I honestly do not know if that's going to work or not. I know that without Tree Climbers, it would not even be on my radar to be thinking about this story or the victims of Sandusky and so many others like him.

This group and everything that has happened here since the epic "FJP" diary has made it possible for me to think about this. I also do find myself looking more closely at the people around me, and their interactions with children. I frankly worry that I'm getting paranoid about it... gosh, I don't want to assume the worst about every person who interacts with kids. That seems extreme. I find myself now looking at the faces of the kids more closely, trying to see if they are genuinely happy and comfortable or if they might be wearing a mask. That's something I have not even thought about before.

I just wanted you to know that this group and your work here and your courage -- yours and SJF's and everyone else here -- has made a real difference. It's amazing. Thank you.

      becomes my strength.

Don't worry, you're not overly paranoid - but you are aware.  And that is what we all need to be.  Aware of the fact that it CAN and DOES happen in the best of families, best of universities, best of organizations.  That sometimes those that are most generous and most involved can also inflict the most pain on the innocent lives of children.

I am angry too.  The last time I used the "F" word this much was my first phone call home from Navy boot camp!!!  (I even dropped an "F" bomb on my sister-in-law who I adore and is so straight and narrow, I'm sure she was completely shocked!)

And I know all too well about the black hole - the pit of despair where we blame ourselves for the abuse we had no control over.  Where we demean ourselves in our internal dialogue that we aren't good enough, aren't pretty enough, aren't skinny enough, aren't worth anything.  I invite you to step OVER that hole and climb up here in the tree -

Let's channel that anger into energy - and turn that negative self-talk around.  No more will we demean ourselves.  We had no control as children, but we DO control our lives now.

And for the children - just talk to them.  People in general want to tell their stories.  And children in particular want someone to see them, to hear them, to listen.  (Especially children of abuse).  If someone would have said to me when I was 6, 7, 8, 9, 10... "Your body is your body" or "It's okay to tell if someone is hurting you" I would have spoken up.

Why do we feel the need to educate our children about stranger danger, but don't give them the tools to protect themselves from the predator within?  (90% of victims of child sexual abuse KNOW their abuser - 68% are abused by a family member).

You elucidate some things that I knew to be true and yet were just smoking around in my mind, floating thoughts.

I agree with you and I have been having the same thoughts and feelings.

Looking at the faces of children in my life and listening to them. That is my solution too.

      thank you for this comment.

  •  Also, Roxine, just wondering... (6+ / 0-)

... are you going to post this diary to the Tree Climbers group? I don't see it on the group page, I found it through your page but I think it would be good to have it on the group's page too. Unless you feel it's not on topic there, but I think it is. Thank you again, for everything.

    •  Thanks, CS.... (6+ / 0-)

I republished it to the Tree Climber's queue. I agree... It should be there as well.

As I read the diaries published by our Tree Climber members, I can see how hard it's been for survivors.

But just on what you have written? It shows you have the strength to confront this new path. It is to protect the children. I think it's hard not to be thrust into the extreme of thinking the possibility that every child may be inflicted with such horrors and that every coach or teacher or relative can be an abuser... But I also think that you will come back to the middle... Just more in focus, more aware to look for the signs.

      ((((((((((((((CS))))))))))))))

I'm glad you find safety in the Tree.  Those that have published diaries on the topic continue to amaze me with their fortitude.  But those, like you, who speak up in response? Just as much strength exhibited.  It helps others to also think how their voice spoken will break the viscious cycle of silence.

Peace to you... And hugs, too.

Roxine posted a comment there. Once again she nailed it.

As a survivor of child sexual abuse I welcome every article on this subject. As horrific as the details are, they must be told so that we - you and I - can know what to "look" for. With the numbers of 1:4 girls and 1:6 boys (of those cases REPORTED) being victims of sexual abuse before the age of 18, this is something that happens more often than not. You probably know a victim/survivor of child sexual abuse. You probably also know a pedophile. (You is used in the collective here, not a personal attack on anyone - I certainly know victims and survivors of CSA and, of course, was abused by a pedophile)

The gut reaction of "I don't want to think about that or look at that or know about that" is the very reason child predators still exist today. Too many people want to turn away - feel that they aren't qualified to help. But we MUST help. There are children TODAY who are being sexually abused. Because we KNOW better, we must DO better.

I think the editors fixed the title of the linked article, because some of the comments do not make sense to me. I think they removed the word "Federal" from the title.

wanted to repost it here -

    sportslawdc -

I agree that everyone wants the truth to come out. But to answer your question "Exactly what would protecting Jerry Sandusky get anyone?" my gut feeling is the almighty $...

I posted an excerpt from an article on CNN stating that in 2008, Jerry Sandusky notified The Second Mile about his being under investigation. And yet he didn't resign until 2010. Why? Because he was their biggest fund raiser - and he kept the money coming in.

As for Penn State - no school wants a scandal. Especially one that is idolized for the fact that there ARE NO SCANDALS - especially when it comes to sports - not under Joe Paterno's watch (from what I understand in my reading up on him - correct me if I'm wrong). So something like this - that a coach, former or otherwise, was being investigated for child sexual abuse? Think logically how that would affect perceptions...People have long memories, and this is a "tag" no one wants.

    Hell, I'm a victim/survivor of child sexual abuse - and I don't want it.

You know if something like this got out, what is happening right now would have happened in 1998 and 2002 - the only difference I see is that more children were allegedly abused during this time - and that is something that can never be repaired.

So there was MUCH to gain from protecting Sandusky. And I'm not saying the KNEW and protected him, but I do believe they suspected, but it was easier to dismiss it than to deal head on with it and ask the right questions.

You know my story - think right now about your father. Now imagine him sexually abusing your child. It's unfathomonable isn't it? So the natural response is that the mind shuts down, shuts it out and won't let you go there. So you make excuses for behaviors that, if a "stranger" was doing to your child, might cause you to pause...

I'm sure if people took the image of smiling, affable Jerry Sandusky and replaced that with "dirty old man" they would see his seemingly normal interactions with kids quite differently. This is the problem with child sexual abuse. The predator doesn't look like a wolf. They look more like a lamb...

regarding CSA.  As repulsive and disguting as the incidents are and for us as survivors, the anxiety level is high just reading about it.  But, we must fight no to expose these sexual deviates and save more children in the future.
