Good morning, and I'm cheating. Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
Denver has had very unsettled weather heading into March. Which, I suppose, is appropriate.
We got up into the 60s on Wednesday, the last day of February — except the wind was gusting so hard I wasn't even tempted to go outside and putter around.
Starting Thursday morning, we've had clouds, cold and spits of snow — March coming in like a baby lion. It's been icky.
But the forecast is for us to warm up and calm down a bit for the beginning of the week — perhaps those last stubborn piles of snow in the back yard will melt off. I mean, it is March. The beginning of the planting season.
And I did see the first tomassinianus crocus — or "tommy" — last Saturday. I did not, however, get out and take a photo of it; this is a photo of last year's first tommy. Which is one of the advantages of having done Saturday Morning Garden Blogging for so many years: I have "stock" photos!
This year's first tommy was a week later than last year's; by this time last year I had all sorts of crocus blooming, like these. Not that I'm complaining — last year's spring was so dry I had a very poor showing of bulbs. We had pretty consistent snow cover through February, so I'm hopeful that this year will be better. I'm willing to wait a few days if means a great show of hyacinth, tulips and daffodils later in the year.
I haven't yet gotten the peas started — I'll absolutely have to get them set out to sprout today or tomorrow. I'm running so behind on that I think it may call for some more experimentation — maybe, after I sprout the Cascadia peas for the front beds, I'll sow them directly into the ground, rather than start them growing in bathroom cups like I usually do (and like I'll do for the backyard, which runs about 2 weeks behind the front yard in warming up).
And I desperately need to douse the brugmansias with insecticidal soap — the spider mites have proliferated over the past couple of weeks. It's just been so horrible outside I haven't wanted to drag them out to the porch to drench them down; too cold for them, too windy for me!
But it's March. Spring is less than 3 weeks away. Soon we'll be turning the clocks ahead.
Whoo hoo!
That's what's happening here. What's going on in you garden?
