You'd think we would've stopped being surprised by the sociopathic mindset of the teabag-waving element of the GOP, but every so often somebody like Ohio's John Kasich reminds us how much lower it's possible to sink.

I live near downtown Cincinnati, and as you've know doubt seen on the news, our region was devastated by a severe tornado outbreak yesterday afternoon. Cincinnati itself was spared the brunt of the storm, but neighboring counties in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio were particularly hard-hit. The storms were so strong that tornadoes a hundred miles away in Indiana were causing leaves and small debris to drift down from the clouds here in Cincinnati. As of this writing, the death toll from the disaster has surpassed 36 people.

One county to the east of Cincinnati, the town of Moscow in Clermont County was nearly wiped off the map. A normal governor with a minimal shred of competence or compassion would immediately declare the county a disaster area, and coordinate with FEMA and other federal agencies on the recovery. Governor Mitch Daniels in neighboring Indiana -- hardly a flaming liberal -- has declared 11 Indiana counties to be disaster areas, clearing the way for federal help. Across the river in Kentucky, Gov. Steve Beshear has similarly declared a statewide emergency.

But here in Ohio, Kasich has responded to the disaster with the type of "leadership" we've come to expect from him:

Kasich says no need for federal help

Gov. John Kasich said he’s not planning to request that Clermont County be declared a federal disaster area.

Speaking at New Richmond High School, Kasich said he believes Ohio has its own resources to deal with the disaster. “I believe that we can handle this,” he said.

Unbelievable. An entire Ohio town has been wiped off the map, but Gov. Kasich refuses to declare Clermont County area a disaster area, because that would make it eligible for federal help. And by "unbelievable," I mean totally believable for a teabag-waving sociopath like Kasich.

6:07 PM PT: First time on the rec list. Thanks!

6:37 PM PT: Thanks again for the recs. I don't post many diaries, but I'm active on Twitter at @LivingInGin. If you're interested in political rants, dark humor, and narcissistic navel-gazing, then you're in for a treat. [/shameless plug]

11:28 PM PT: Fortunately, we don't need John Kasch's permission to help in the relief efforts. If you feel so inclined, the Cincinnati Red Cross would be a good place to start.

Another organization close to my heart is Architecture for Humanity, which provides free or low-cost professional design services to disaster-stricken areas around the world.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
