jett Q What if the TROOPS want to hear him
OHC A I don't know. I'll think on it.
dave A It is an intersting point ... to which I wrote this in response yesterday ...
Imagine the following scenario; a group of soldiers, women and men, stationed at a base overseas, perhaps in Afghanistan, are on break, sipping coffee, eating sandwiches, and the radio in the break room has Armed Forces Radio network programming, and at that moment Limbaugh's show is on, and his virulent, misogynistic, belligerent attack on women is filling the room. Everybody hears it, the men, and the women.
It makes for a hostile work environment. A very hostile and uncomfortable work environment.
This isn't about free speech, or balanced right wing/left wing programming, or even about providing the programming that the listeners want. Part of the mission of our military in recent years has been a significant effort among military leaders to broaden the understanding and appreciation among our soldiers for treating each other fairly and equally, engendering respect for the women who wear the uniform of our country. Limbaugh's program works directly against this mission. His program is counter productive to that mission.
Limbaugh's program reinforces the idea that it's ok to treat women like sexual objects rather than fellow soldiers. And while most soldiers would reject that notion; the rabid Limbaugh fans won't. They will see it as approval of their hostility toward women, from a source accepted by Armed Forces Radio, and as permission to act out against women.
In my view, for this reason, he should be taken off of Armed Forces Radio. Our women in uniform deserve better than this.
OHC A My gut and brain are telling me that this joker does much more harm than good. His comments have not led to rational discussion; his vitriolic hate is expressed in everything he says. He hates all women, he hates the president, he hates the government, he's a cowardly bully, his influence is way more than is warranted. What good does he actually do? I don't see any. I see a drain on our national psyche! A parasite that feeds on hate. What good does he do anyone or anything besides his fat wallet?
GDbot A The fear and loathing and hatred he promotes just makes it that much more difficult to focus our energies on the more important problems that we must work on. It all seems to be just a distracting noise designed to keep us from talking with each other about the issues that are critical for Survival Into the 22nd Century. I think that pisses me off more than anything else. Rush is just divisive, fear mongering, hate talking ugliness. We don't need that in our civilization right now.
We are trying to extract the true reasons this man should be off the military air. We all are trying to find the worth in this man and why he and his method, whatever you want to call it, his opinions, his brilliant comedy, aren't seen for what they truly are. I've read a little about Father Coughlin and McCarthy and their insidious brainwashing of low-information people. They we caught-on to, people finally realized they were nothing but sacks of walking neuroses and they fell. They eventually fell.
You know the story, the what and why. Thanks so much to all of you for your help in moving it forward.
I'll put in more later if nec, but power's going out intermittently and I''d better publish now.
