The past couple of days have been interesting.
To be honest, I was a little shocked at what stirred up the hornet's nest and the bee hive at the same time.
I had heard rumors that there were strong opinions surrounding this subject. Some individual I've interacted with on this site even implied there was a strong animus.
How could this be? I thought we were all working towards the same end. We all want to make this a better world for us and our future generations.
To get there, we all will need to work together to make that happen. We need to celebrate our successes together. We need to support each other when times are hard.
We are stronger together.
So...A little background for those who are joining mid-episode...
Yesterday, Cedwyn posted this diary. Can We Please Stop the South-bashing? I still don't know what inspired that, but it got me to thinking.
I really feel people outside the South don't know what progressives, liberals, and activists do here. We are constantly waging battles big and small. Our voices are diverse and spread out. The problem it seems is that all the small victories and small battles that we wage aren't as publicized as the crazy things that happen in the region.
So, that inspired me to form a group that is focused on publicizing Southern items. This will include victories, various calls to action and calls for help, and overall promoting and solidifying the Southern voice on this site.
Then, in seemingly perfect timing, Troubadour posted a diary. This rant solidified the fact that the Southerners on this site need to lift their voices in unison. Most don't know the battles we are fighting. Not only are we fighting, but sometimes we are winning. Even when we don't win, we get stronger. We learn our lessons, and we apply them to the next fight. We work hard, and love harder. And that love for our friends and family keeps us pushing those boulders uphill, because we want a better world for them...just like everyone else on this site.
I tell you this. Don't underestimate us Southern Progressives. We are fighters. Do not mistake politeness for weakness. We are passionate about the things we care about, be that college football, Bar-B-Q, or progressive causes.
So please, help me amplify the Southern Voices. Join us in the new group Southern Action. Expect the Southern Hospitality we are known for.
6:16 PM PT: Thank you all for the kind words. I'm glad there is support for this idea. I'm heading out for the night, so if you want to be added, leave it in the comments or KosMail the group or myself. I will hit you up tomorrow with the first action plans.
