It was a day-long festival in Zuccotti Park / Liberty Square today in New York City.  Occupiers re-occupied the park, celebrating the six-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street's founding.  It's now past midnight on the East Coast. A large number of people stayed in Zuccotti for the evening, but have now been ordered out and are being beaten by NYPD.

A different kind of Park Occupation took place in Oakland, CA today. Some three hundred Occupy Oaklanders and Oakland residents got together and held a barbeque / speakout / talk-fest at Arroyo Park in East Oakland this afternoon.

#OOBBQ ! Come join us until 5pm. Lunch time! info table, childrens village, music, workshops! #OO #OWS #oakland

(The 100+ estimate was early-on. The BBQ went from 12:00 noon until 5:00, and I individually counted more than 200 people over just a few minutes at one point. Surely at least 300 and probably 400 people came by over the course of the five hours)

You probably won't read anything about the Oakland event anywhere but here. Of course, that's because there were no arrests. No shields. No tear gas. No violence. That's for one very good reason: no police. Just a bunch of happy campers gourmands stuffing their faces with incredible bbq-ed chicken and awesome deserts, talking shit is fucked up and stuff.

We were probably violating have a dozen ordinances (pavilions, food, dogs, tarps on the ground, more than 20 people without a permit, FSM knows what else), but with no police to fuck things up by selectively enforcing stupid, petty regulations, and with Occupy Oakland's highly trained Barbeque Committee and cleanup crew, it all came down without so much as an angry word. It's called peacefully assembling, and it's in the Constitution.

Is there any doubt that if NYPD stayed away from Zuccotti as OPD stayed away from Arroyo that anything bad would have happened?

You'd almost think that, for today, Oakland was New York, and New York was Oakland.

Oakland? No, New York!

Word is woman beaten by cops is Cecily McMillan. Wrote about her in Rolling Stone:

Sat Mar 17, 2012 at 10:02 PM PT: Cindy McMillan

McMillan is Northeast regional organizer for the youth section of the Democratic Socialists of America, which bills itself as the largest socialist organization in the United States. She's been involved with the Occupy movement since August, despite sharp differences with most of the people in the park. "I believe in a constrained view of revolution," she says, by which she means putting pressure on mainstream politicians.

And for this, she says, she has suffered. "I have been called a terrorist. I have been called CIA, FBI. I have been called a Democrat!" Like Lasn, she wants regime change. Unlike most of the occupiers, she believes it requires the guidance of those, like her, possessed of what she calls "cultural capital."

She's a former cheerleader; she used to want to be a politician. She says her studies and her work – she's also a nanny – prevent her from sleeping in the park. But she's not afraid to put her body on the line. She was arrested after she charged Wall Street three times, a "direct action" that even some veteran anarchists – militant and masked – considered wildly courageous, if foolish. A cop thought so, too, blasted her with pepper spray, knocked her down, stepped on her head and snarled at her, "Shut up. You get what you deserve, cunt bitch."

Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
