The French news channel BFM said one adult and two children were among the dead. Reuters are reporting that a fourth person has been injured in the attack.

French reports claim the shooting took place at Ozar Hatorah College in Jolimont, northeast ofToulouse. It comes just days after two other incidents in which soldiers were gunned down by a man on a motorbike in the same region. [..]

Police in southwestern France launched a major manhunt last week after the killing of three paratroopers and the wounding of another in two separate, but connected incidents. The perpetrator of both attacks fled on a motorbike.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  derailing a perp on a motorbike.... (2+ / 0-)

.... can be done in an emergency by suddenly swerving into the bike in traffic.  Highly not-recommended to try this unless you are absolutely certain that you have just witnessed a murder and you are absolutely certain that the perp is riding the bike in question.

The principle of "defense of self or others" applies here because if the perp escapes there is a high probability they will go on to commit additional murders, for example shooting cops to avoid being taken into custody.

I think it is highly likely that this tactic of drive-by killing using a motorcycle as the vehicle, will spread.  All it takes is for a couple of killers to get away, and the word will be out.  An additional advantage for the killer is that many modern motorcycles are designed in a manner such that the license plate is very difficult to see, for example being mounted at an acute angle over the top of the rear wheel.  A bit of convenient mud will render the plate illegible.  And a quick repaint of the gas tank and a few other components will make it hard to spot the bike later.

This is the type of thing where prevention is the best cure, by strengthening security around likely targets (sigh, here we go again: any Jewish or progressive Christian or Islamic place of worship or school).  There are very few places a human can walk, that are not accessible to motorcycles, so this is going to take some less-than-obvious design elements to make it work.

      •  Yes, because the Mossad invented it (9+ / 0-)

Thank you for being sure to bring Israel into this diary. I'm sure it reminded people of who is REALLY responsible for these murders.

By the way, Israel and the Mossad didn't invent motorcycles, guns, or their use together.

        YOU'RE WRONG.

        Really wrong.

        Seriously wrong.

So wrong, I wonder about your ulterior motives in posting this.

        •  ulterior motives weren't in evidence. (6+ / 0-)

I don't think it's helpful to assume that the commenter you replied to has ulterior motives.

The fact that the tactic has been used elsewhere e.g. the Philippines, is interesting, but the most recent instance that received widespread coverage was the one that occurred in Iran.

That also provides a basis for hypotheses about motive and attribution: anti-Semetic revenge motives, and possible subnational groups that are allied with or sympathetic to Iran.

Though as I mention below, we should beware of domestic French anti-Semetic groups providing "evidence" linking this to the Iranian government.

What also concerns me is the risk of this tactic coming to the US, so IMHO potential targets here should be thinking about enhancing their security measures.  And for once in a darn long time, I am at a total loss as to what types of preventive measures could be useful here, since motorcycles can go just about anywhere a person can walk.

I suggest you read the diary more carefully. The attacks are against different minority groups. The soldiers killed were of north African or Caribbean appearance.

These seem to be a generalized attacks against all perceived non-white minorities in France so your introduction of a specific antisemitic motive is just wrong.

The attacks are in an area where the National Front and Marine Pen, their presidential candidate, have hotbeds of support so it may well be an attempt to stir up a number of minority groups to protest in order to get a counter-reaction to boost the FN's vote.

to consider anti-Semitism in an indiscriminate drive-by at a Jewish school.

One, it's difficult to perceive most European Jews as "non-white." Non-Aryan, sure.

Two, though the National Front has refocused its hate on Muslims, their rich history of anti-Semitism makes it unlikely that they'd be able to whip up voters in their favor by gunning down Jewish kids.

Three, there's nothing to suggest that the soldiers who were attacked were victims of a racial motive.

            •  diary + news reports said "Jewish school." (0+ / 0-)

When you get a drive-by shooting at a Jewish institution, the first hypothesis you have to look at is that it was motivated by anti-Semitism.

And if this is the work of a group with international connections, there is a reasonable probability that we may see these types of attacks here.

Given all the history of terrorist activities, that is not an unreasonable assumption.

In which case, job #1 is attribution and prevention, and beefing up security at locations that may become targets.

it's pretty much guaranteed to be antisemitic, by the nature of the target.

what is unknown so far is which type of group did this hit, and whether it's related to the other murders.

This is the third in a series of similar attacks that have happened in the same area. Maybe the fact that it only comes into the consiousness of Americans or gets posted about on here when the victims are from a Jewish school is significant.

I made the connection with the earlier attacks as soon as I heard of the scooter being used. This has now been confirmed by the French police who have matched bullets in this attack to the same gun used in the earlier two.

... the news reporting of Mossad or whoever-it-was using a motorcycle in the assassination of the Iranian nuclear scientist.

That put the meme in circulation, and of course the first people to pick it up elsewhere had to be anti-Semites probably thinking of revenge by killing Jews more or less at random.

One of the reports I heard on the news (CBS radio network) called it a "scooter," which usually refers to vehicles with smaller wheels and more bodywork, the latter making them more identifiable.

One thing we need to be careful of, is anti-Semetic groups planting "evidence" to make it appear that this (and subsequent attacks of this type) was/were the work of the Iranian government, in an attempt to stir up a war in the hope that Israel would suffer large civilian casualties.  The way these people think, the Iranians killed in a war would be "expendable" and "collateral damage" along the way to the goal of killing more Jews (Israelis).

And of course there is a possibility that the tactic will spread to the US, so the usual items about heightened security apply here as well.
