Amid war fever, some Israelis and Iranians talk of peace

McClatchy Newspapers

JERUSALEM -- Hoping to counter the incessant saber rattling from their respective governments, some Israelis and Iranians have started an online campaign to exchange simple messages of friendship and love.

The initiative, which began with Israeli couple Ronny Edry and Michal Tamir, calls for residents of each country to exchange photographs with the words, "We love you."

"I'm not an official representative of my country. I'm a father and a teacher," Edry wrote on his blog, He included a photograph of him and his son. "I know the streets of my town, I talk with my neighbors, my family, my students, my friends and in the name of all these people ... we love you. We mean you no harm. On the contrary, we want to meet, have some coffee and talk about sports."

Within days, the first responses from Iran began to appear. The images posted by Israelis and Iranians are strikingly similar - they show people in the midst of daily activities, posing with their children, dog or favorite book. Some include messages such as "We don't want war," and "I wish we both get rid of our idiot politicians." Often, it's impossible to tell where the message originated until the telltale tag line, Iran (or Israel) we love you. MORE HERE

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I'm not a social media person -- (except here, of course).  I don't use Facebook or Tweet.  This simple message and the responses give me hope that the ordinary citizen can trump the insanity of warmongers.

    Thank you.

I had this dream a few years ago.  I can still see it playing out.
It's a school auditorium or something like that.  It's full of Iranian adults and their kids, and Israeli Adults and their kids.

I see this as some sort of gripe session, but without those running for office, trapped by what they need to say to get elected.  But one by one, a parent takes the podium to say hello, and introduce their children, and asks a favor from the other side.

Behind the podium are 15 or so 3 to 6 year old kids on the stage behind who ever is speaking.  These kids  have toys, and blankets to sit on, and are basically just  hanging out, playing, and being kids.

It's what's needed.   People are people, and they have kids, and they really just want to share recipes, talk about music, and how they hate their job.

I hope seeing Iranian kids playing with Israeli kids can trump religion, and the promised hate religion brings.

It's  just this weird dream that has been playing, over, and over, and over for years.

Maybe it is cellular memory, knowing history, my family's history... I have always felt an attachment of some kind to the Iranian people. I am Jewish, and Cyrus of Persia treated us well. Look at my face (especially from when I was younger)... and you can see the Central Asian in me.

Or maybe it's because I am an artist and Iran has a huge artistic community... I don't know. I have just always felt this connection. Or it could be the Green Revolution.

So, to the people (not the gov't, but the people) of Iran, I say to you too; I love you! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

All the voices saying, "It's so complicated. We can't allow the threat to grow. It's too late to turn back."

And, once again, some crazy, starry-eyed artist shows the world exactly how to turn back, how to stop a war.

                        (Roy Kerwood)

There's only one thing to do... there's only one thing's gonna do any good at all... And that's everybody just look at it, look at the war, and turn your backs and say... Fuck it...

    Home... home on the range...

Just look at it and turn away and say... Fuck it....

    Allies make me puke

I can understand if one goes to war to defend one's land.

But going to war just because you can, or just b/cos you think its preempting a future strike is morally wrong and unconscionable.

Just what makes these guys think the Iranians want to nuke Israelis? Rantings of the Iranian Pres does not mean he is foolish enough to actually bomb Israel.

Do the mullahs think the world will let them go unpunished? That there will be no retaliation? really? Bomb Israel and the world goes on for them like nothing happened?

The rightwing and the current Israeli Govt are just panning for war because war and aggression is what they do to detract from other pressing issues and to line up the pockets of the defense contractors

  •  What a thing!! Absolutely wonderful. (0+ / 0-)

Blessed be all of the people of Iran and Israel. No war. No war. No war.
