Oh, nothing in the game. Not a single thing in the game.
The reaction to the game. And the reaction to the reaction.
Cliff notes version: Mass Effect 3 was released to overwhelming customer dissatisfaction with one particular part of the game. Rather than address the actual contents of the complaints, Bioware and their media allies first painted the protestors as homophobic in an attempt to smear the protest... (Sadly, I fell for this initially.)
Next, the company released no media statement, instead smearing the fans through third parties as "Entitled", "Whiners" and "Stupid". Finally, after two constant weeks of protest, Bioware agreed to make concessions. However, they gave no details, and redoubled the attacks on their critics in the meantime. The protesters declared victory. (Link)
(How this relates to US Politics on the flip.)
Edit: I need to clarify. The objectionable portion was NOT the LGBTQ content. It was the endings. Just the endings. Although there was a lot of initial information that the protest was with regards to the "Romances" in the game, it was erroneous.
What we are seeing here is a prime example of how politicians respond to criticism.
They don't. They ignore. They smear, and when the protests become too much, they issue a half assed statement in an attempt to placate the masses.
And then, when all else fails, they send in the cops. Course, fortunately for the people protesting a video game decision, the company can't actually use the police.
What I find scary is that I'm seeing these horrible tactics used by a company that makes entertainment. Has every corporation in America totally succumbed to the idea that they have power? Why does it require an $80,000 charity drive to get a reaction when 90+% of fans are upset, according to one poll?
All I can say to ME 3 fans who feel they won... Great Job. Now let's notice that what you were mad about is the exact same thing that's going on in politics across America. It was a great starter project. But there's still work to be done.
We need to Hold the Line again. This time... for women... for the LGBTQ folks who are still under attack... for those that are gunned down in the streets for clothing selections...
