An Ohio high school student has his rights violated when his school threatened to suspend him if he wore a shirt with the slogan “Jesus is not a homophobe.” The student, Maverick Couch, wanted to wear the shirt to promote tolerance of gays and lesbians. Now correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t schools supposed to help put a stop to bullying? Not only is the school violating his First Amendment rights but the school is also bullying him by shaming him into not wearing the shirt. Couch should be able to stand up for who he is and what he believes in.
The school’s excuse for not letting Maverick Couch wear his shirt is they believe that the shirt is sexual and inappropriate. How is saying Jesus is not a homophobe sexual in nature? Let me get this straight…wearing a fish with a rainbow in it and the word homophobic are now considered sexual, but allowing girls to wear short shorts and pants with “Juicy” on their rears is not? Couch in turn is suing the school district for violating his freedom of expression rights. I say….good for him.
