I ran into an old friend yesterday. We were close friends 30 years ago, but that friendship has declined over the years for a variety of reasons. The last time I saw him was at his brother's funeral nearly a year ago. I was very pleasantly surprised to bump into him and his youngest son in the local mall...a place neither of us is likely to be found very often!
We both finished our errands, then sat in the food court to talk and catch up. All was going well until...
...I mentioned the fact that a mutual friend and I were working on ways to write a manifesto of sorts to promote a more sane (meaning liberal) view of biblical Christianity.
My friend's first question..."you mean you're going to be working with Pro-Life groups?"
I quickly said, "No, I mean that we are going to be promoting ways for Christians to better live out the words of Jesus pertaining to justice issues...you know, making sure that people are fed and cared for, for example."
His response: "Well, you know Obama is pushing to be able to kill babies up to several months after birth."
My flabbergasted reply: "That's ridiculous!" (That's all I could think of!)
Not surprisingly, we pretty quickly wrapped up our conversation and went our separate ways.
So, even here in the bluest of blue states - Vermont, there is an amazing amount of hatred for our president as well as dangerously deluded misinformation floating around. If this is what some people believe here, what kinds of things are happening in places where conservatives occur in larger concentrations?!?
