So Rick Santorum is “suspending” his campaign. That’s politician speak for “I can’t win, so I’m quitting.”
On the one hand, Rick Santorum deserves massive credit for getting more victories and more delegates for less money than any other candidate in modern history.
On the other hand, Conservative voters decided that Santorum was their very last choice, after picking through the dross of Michele Bachman, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Ron Paul and numerous other flakes, flim-flam artists and bozos.
Rick Santorum emerges from the 2012 Campaign with a mixed legacy. Yes, he earned points for tenacity, hard-work and sheer grittiness. But he also further cemented his reputation as a sex-obsessed, religious fanatic who comes across as sanctimonious and holier-than-thou.
Santorum will be remembered as the guy who came in 2nd place in a year when no first rate candidates decided to run for the GOP nomination.
Yes, Santorum can run again for President in 2012, but he still won’t be many Republicans’ first choice for President, in 2016 or any other year.
