In an attempt to burnish his credentials as a regular guy, Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) has a new radio ad praising the 100th year of Fenway Park. In the ad, Brown says:
You know, there's been a lot of talk over the years about replacing the park, but that would've been a mistake. [Red Sox owner] John Henry, [Chairman] Tom Warner and [CEO] Larry Lucchino deserve credit for improving what we have, instead of starting over somewhere else.
The problem? When Scott Brown was in the state legislature, he
supported moving the Red Sox out of Boston and Fenway Park and building a new stadium for them somewhere else. Dozens of media outlets in Massachusetts are
pointing this out, so all Brown is getting from his ad is a lot of negative publicity. For example,
The Globe:
Back in 2001, when the Red Sox ownership was looking to relocate the Red Sox, Brown, then a state representative, not only pushed to remove the team from the storied park, but also out of Boston.
As a state legislator, he pressed to have the Sox move to Foxborough, the town adjacent to his own town of Wrentham. In a letter dated January, 2001, Brown asked Patriots owner Robert Kraft to consider using property around his football stadium to build a new ballpark.
Fortunately, Scott Brown's attempt to move Red Sox out of Fenway failed. Otherwise, as Scott Brown says, Scott Brown would have denied future generations of Red Sox fans an important connection to the past.
