He was on Real Time last night and I learned that the guy who has been ragging on Obama for not talking about the poor has been, and still is, a big fan of Bill Clinton. So Maher correctly brought up last weeks article about the disastrous consequences of welfare reform, which Tavis said he disagreed with Clinton on...which is all well and good. But then Maher asked him why he isn't more supportive of Obama and the ACA becausee it has the biggest expansion of Medicaid in history and is explicitly a bill that goes in the opposite direction of welfare reform. Tavis' reply was to bring up process and Obama's compromises with industry groups and then to assert that many progressives would be fine if the SCOTUS struck the law down.
That's fine to have those opinions (i share some of them) but then don't claim the guy who gave us Nafta, glass steagall repeal, welfare reform, dadt, doma and much more was great. Nothing gets me angrier than liberals who legitimately criticize Obama but then turn out to be fans of Bill Clinton, who I view as a guy who was a popular president for 8 years and did absolutely NOTHING. I at least expected Tavis to be consistent.
