Good evening and welcome to Sunday Puzzle Warm-Up.
The Sunday Puzzle series was started by Julie Waters (or juliewolf, as she posted by back then) on October 28, 2007. I believe her first JulieCrostic on Daily Kos appeared December 30, 2007.
Julie died last week. In her honor, tomorrow's Sunday Puzzle will feature the Julie Waters memorial puzzle challenge -- a challenge Julie herself created, and which no one has ever completed!
If you love puzzles, if you loved Julie, or if you'd like to take part in sharing memories of a wonderful and multi-talented woman, I hope you'll come to Sunday Puzzle tomorrow morning.
Tonight's Sunday Puzzle Warm-Up features an introduction to tomorrow's challenge: the first 10 puzzles in a series Julie created. These 10 are fairly easy, and should serve as a nice warm-up.
And since SPW-U usually features an introductory JulieCrostic, I've included one of those as well tonight.
If you'd like to be part of the solving team, set comments to expand so you can see what other people are saying. (If you'd prefer to solve the puzzle on your own, set comments to shrink or to hide so you won't see what others have said.)
Puzzles coming up, right after the nurple.
Here are the first 10 puzzles in the Julie Waters Memorial Puzzle Challenge. These are all fairly easy, and suitable for a Warm-Up diary. Tomorrow they'll get harder!
These are from a site Julie created, and which for the moment is still up. Originally it was a sort of contest, with a prize offered for the first person to solve all the puzzles. No one has done so yet.
With Julie gone, I assume the contest is over. If it isn't, and if we manage to solve all the puzzles in the challenge, then the money should go to Julie's beloved partner MoonWomyn as a donation to help her keep Julie's web sites alive.) Tomorrow, more of the puzzles (and the web address, so people can enter the answers and see if they're correct without having to wait for me to confirm rightness or wrongness.) But these should be enough to give you a taste. Enjoy -- and remember Julie!

how to solve JulieCrostics
Read the clues provided, then fill in answers to match the clues in the appropriately numbered spaces in the diagram.
Each word in a row has all the letters of the previous word in that row, plus one new letter.
Write the new letter in the space between the answers. For example, if the answers in a row were CRAG, CARGO and COUGAR, you'd place an "O" in the space between CRAG and CARGO, a "U" in the space between CARGO and COUGAR.
When you have filled in all the spaces correctly, the columns formed by the added letters should spell out related words. It might be a person's name, such as CHARLES DICKENS (spelled out in two columns). It might be the title of a book or movie, such as GONEW ITHTH EWIND (spelled out in three columns). It might be almost anything. Your challenge is to figure out what the verticals say and what they mean.
