As many of you know, North Carolina has Amendment One on the ballot in May, which adds a "one man, one woman" article to the state constitution. I've seen a mix of yard signs, partly depending on where I am, both for and against.
Most of my immediate neighbors seem to be fairly liberal, or at least not raving right-wing lunatics. The only yard sign near me was put up by the two lesbians at the top of the hill; needless to say they are opposed to the amendment.
Well, that was true until a few days ago, when the Mormon next-door neighbors put up the "Protect Us All From Teh Gay!!!" (paraphrased) sign. More details below the Same-Shape Squiggle of Immorality.
I promptly went out to get (truly) pro-family shirt, but each time I am wearing it the neighbors are not around. However, one of the women with the other sign apparently showed up yesterday, tore up the sign, and shouted at my neighbors that they'd better not pretend to be friendly any more if this was the way they were going to act.
While I'm not really in favor of ripping up signs for the opposition, this woman was down there trying to explain to her 6-year-old daughter what the bigotry was all about, and evidently lost her cool.
My neighbors have replaced the sign this morning, so the issue is not going to go away. I guess it's now time for me to have a frank and honest conversation with them about the fact that they can believe what they want for themselves, but that voting in religious oppression to the state constitution is going way too far.
Oh, and the lesbians and my family both attend the same United Church of Christ, which has interpreted the words of Jesus a little more inclusively than my neighbors. I really hope that there are enough like-minded people in the state to defeat this thing, but I'm not holding my breath.
