Why is it that otherwise intelligent people will believe any outrageous lie about President Obama without doing even a basic Google?  I spent time yesterday debunking several that I received from a former friend before giving up in defeat because there is nothing I or anyone else could say to her that would change her mind.  Then today I heard from another seemingly sane friend passing along an email she got from her insurance agent.  It too was bogus and easily disproved.  This time I did a reply all and said:

Not true, just another email lie to attack President Obama:

There are any number of them circulating, so best to do a little research before believing them.

I hope she will still be talking to me, but my patience is wearing thin.

This was today's lie:

MEDICARE

Look clearly at the 2014 rate compared to the 2013 rate.

For those of you who are on Medicare, read the following. It's short, but
important and you probably haven't heard about it in the Mainstream News:

"The per person Medicare Insurance Premium will increase from the present
Monthly Fee of $96.40, rising to:

$104.20 in 2012
$120.20 in 2013
And
$247.00 in 2014."

These are Provisions incorporated in the Obama care Legislation, purposely
delayed so as not to confuse the 2012 Re-Election Campaigns. Send this to
all Seniors that you know, so they will know who's throwing them under the
bus.

False of course:

http://www.snopes.com/...

She apparently sent out the email in her official capacity; I wonder if she knows it is a lie.

Yesterday I received a long anti Obama screed purported to be from historian David Kaiser.  False again, it was a forgery.

She asked for my thoughts, so I replied:

My thoughts are that you should do some research before believing this bogus email about President Obama, one of many that the right wing has used to fool gullible folks into believing a lot of nonsense.

From David Kaiser:

“The email circulating widely attributed to me comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler is a forgery: see snopes.com/politics/soapbox/proportions.asp.”

http://www.blogger.com/...

http://www.snopes.com/...

From Wikipedia:

“In April 2009, a viral email comparing Barack Obama to the rise of the Third Reich was wrongly [1] attributed to Kaiser. Kaiser has stated that the email is a forgery.[1] The email does not reflect Kaiser's actual views.[2] Snopes.com [2] traced the email content to an anonymous commenter on Pat Dollard's blog.”

You might also read what David Kaiser really thinks on his blog:

Or even learn some facts about President Obama instead of believing bogus internet scare mongering.

http://www.biography.com/...

http://en.wikipedia.org/...

I received this mindless reply:

Even if the author isn't Kaiser, don't you believe that most of what is in the article is true?  Doesn't any of it bother you?   I believe it and that's what scares me.  I  am also alarmed at this administration's attempt to remove all signs and expression of Christian faith from anything and everything.

How can people be so stupid?

After assuring her that I did not believe what was in the bogus email (really who believes known lies?) I attempted a rational reply and was rewarded for my effort with something just as bad:

That doesn't make Obama qualified to be President.  I believe in women's rights too, but those rights don't include killing babies....and especially ripping a baby's head from it's body or smashing it to kill it when the abortion fails.  These are things Obama believes should be a woman's "right."  I have no respect for him or his racist wife.

And after one more attempt at a rational response, this was next:

they are not lies.  They are just not reported by the media.  I'm sure, however, the time will come when they will be exposed.  Why is it all the liberal people were so quick to believe and hate George Bush for all the lies that were reported about him during his presidency?  At least he didn't pay millions of dollars to have all his records (birth, college, dissertations, etc) hidden from the public.  Did you ever wonder why we can't see the records from his college where he got a full scholarship as a "foreign student?"  I'm convinced something will FINALLY be uncovered that will show him to be the fake and fraud that he is.  I don't think it will be needed, but I hope it happens before the election.

My final response, after which I admit defeat.

They are lies (one even an April Fools joke), but if you want to believe they are true, there is nothing more to be said.

It is depressing to know that there are any number of equally closed minded voters who will no doubt be marching to the polls to vote against President Obama.  This is what we are up against.  Policies do not matter.  Romney does not matter.  The truth does not matter.  Facts do not matter.  It is all about the President.  I just hope there enough rational people to prevail.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

& operating oil rigs have quadrupled since 2008, Republicans still complain that it's not on federal land.

Facts do not penetrate.  They live in the FOX bubble.  My sister is one of them.  She told me today she misses the class & dignity of George Bush.  OMG.....stop the pain.

She lost most of her retirement savings in 2008 when the stock market fell to 6,600.  She refuses to admit that under President Obama it has now risen to over 13,000 & her savings have now been restored.

You gave it a good try.  I've realized there is no point in reality w/ these people.

Never ever let this kind of thing slide. It emboldens the scum and it just grows unchecked. Reasoning with them is like trying to talk sense into cave snot, but you can ensure they are brought to account professionally.

Lying cowardice is a requirement for being a conservative. If you're not a lying scumbag coward, they won't let you in.

had bought the vote counting software which was going to be used to count EVERY SINGLE VOTE in the 2012 presidential election ... and THEY ARE MAJOR OBAMA DONORS!!!!

It took all of about 3 seconds to react to "every single vote" ... "Don't the states do that?"  I started my reply to my cousin before I even Snopes the email.  They had an entry that was only a week old.  This tells me my cousin is fairly high-placed in the RW propaganda email tree.  For an intelligent and well-educated man he sure likes to accept these things without thinking about them any deeper than, "It attacks Obama, Oh Boy!"

BTW - the company does exist and did recently buy vote counting software that is used by a few states.  There are no indications of them making donations to the Obama campaign in either 2008 or 2012.  Just a small kernel of truth wrapped in big, fat, bacony slice of bullshit.

  •  The only thing that I found that has worked... (0+ / 0-)

Was when it was done in person.

You have to sell them like a slick used car salesman sorry to say.  Ask them a seemingly innocent question.

    They'll agree.

Build on it with another follow up.

They'll agree, some of the brighter will start to slow with a "Yes, but..." without following up the "but".

    Then one last one.

    They'll reluctantly agree.

Then point them to how that is what the President has done.  It either educates or infuriates, sometimes both.

I got practice not too long ago when the ACA was being brought to the supreme court.  Talked with my dad, and...

I asked if getting rid of the pre-existing condition crap was a good idea.
Then asked if it was a good idea for my college age brother to stay on insurance instead of having either no insurance or a much more expensive policy offered elsewhere.
And closed with a removal of the lifetime cap and the retro-active cancellation.

The response I received was along the lines "Is that what it really does?"
