These days a lot of people are saying a lot of crazy nut-bag stuff.  Ann Coulter used to be the undisputed queen of the crazy, with Michelle Malkin barking at her heels.  Now we get the crazy from Newt (Moon Base Factor 5) Gingrich, Rick (Contraceptives are Bad) Santorum, Allen (Progressives are Communists) West, and Virginia (Students Loans are Evil) Foxx.

So these days, Coulter has to say something that displays a Special K Brand of Crazy to get noticed among the nut-bag din. Therefore we have a situation where she suggests that the solution for Black people like Trayvon Martin - who was a minor - being profiled is for them to Get More Guns.

Yes, really - as if America doesn't already have enough of them.

(Sorry - Embed isn't working)

“We don’t know the facts yet, but let’s assume the conclusion MSNBC is leaping to is accurate: George Zimmerman stalked a small black child and murdered him in cold blood, just because he was black,” Coulter wrote in a column titled “Negroes with Guns.”

“If that were true, every black person in America should get a gun and join the National Rifle Association, America’s oldest and most august civil rights organization.

Uh, What!!!??

But wait, it gets worse.

Yeah, I can see how Black People are going to feel extreme comfortable palling around with people like this.

Back to Coulter.

“It was the Republican Party and the NRA that has always supported arming blacks in order to protect themselves from the Democratic Ku Klux Klan,” she explained.

O’Reilly summed up Coulter’s argument: “So what you’re saying is if MSNBC’s and NBC News’ hypothesis is true that this was a racially-biased driven murder, that all African Americans should take that as a warning sign and arm themselves against that happening to them. Therefore, they should support the NRA, they should support he the law that allows you to fight back if threatened and they should arm themselves.

“Yes,” Coulter agreed. “And the reason I thought of it is because liberals are leaping to exactly the opposite conclusion that, ‘Oh, we have to get rid of these Stand Your Ground laws.’ They’re against easy issuing of concealed carry permits. As well as I point out in my column, Martin Luther King Jr., a Christian minister under constant death threats, applied for a gun permit after his house was fire bombed and the Alabama authorities, under the discretionary gun permit law, said, ‘No. No, this Christian minister is not suitable for a gun permit.’ That’s how discretionary permits work. The history books will often try and twist the history by referring to the KKK and the racist as Southerners. Oh, no, no, no. The Republicans in the South weren’t discriminatory. … The one thing all of the discriminators and the KKK sympathizers — or KKK themselves — had in common was they were all Democrats.

So let's get this straight here, her ideas is that Trayvon Martin - a 17-year-old - should have had a concealed carry permit, and been packing a 9mm just like George Zimmerman and then, and only then, would he be safe?

That if only Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had been granted a gun permit, he wouldn't have been shot in the throat by a sniper?

How would that work exactly?

And what's this mess about the NRA being a "Civil Rights Organization"?  That's not how they started out, they were a marksmanship club and shooting team formed by former Civil War Soldiers in 1871.  Yes, that does predate the NAACP which was formed in 1909, but their purposes were entirely different.  The NAACP was formed to combat Lynchings of Black People and began fighting that through the courts from it's inception.  The NRA from it's beginning was focused on improving the marksmanship of U.S. soldiers exclusively until their legislative arm was formed in 1934 in support of the National Firearms Act, 25 Years after the NAACP was formed.

As to the issue of the KKK being connected with the Democratic Party - as the old Deep Throat character from the X-Files used to say, "A lie is best contained between two truths" - in this case what she claims is true, but is also a lie.  The KKK were actually linked with Dixiecrats who were in truth unrepentant Confederates who resented Lincoln the first Republican President. They were also something else, they were Conservatives.

After passage of the Civil Rights Act, those Conservatives Left the Democratic Party in Droves led by the late U.S. Senator Strom Thurman.  They became Republicans.

It was Republican Presidential Candidate Barry Goldwater who opposed the Civil Rights Act, not just Southern Dixiecrats like Thurman or the late Democratic Senator Byrd.

And today the KKK and those who oppose Civil Rights are STILL Republicans and Conservatives.

What Party did former Grand Wizard David Duke run under?  Republican.

What Party has both Ron and Rand Paul who have both echoed the Goldwater objection to the Civil Rights Act, arguing that Property Rights are More important than Civil Rights? Republican.

The argument that the KKK is exclusively or totally "Democratic" is just plain bull crap.

But let's get to the deeper issue, the view that "Stand Your Ground" is a good thing in general for Black people - but gee - if only more of them were armed people would just leave them alone.

Yeah, uh huh.

It was because a 9-11 caller lied when he claimed he was robbed at gunpoint, that police shot and killed 19-year-old Kendrec McDade in Pasadena last month.  Kendrec wasn't armed, and he also wasn't the right person.

Here's video of Police Shooting and Killing 22 year-old Shonchy Thaopraseuth because he had a gun. Allegedly.

The claim was that Patrick Dorismond had a gun, when Police shot and killed him.  He didn't.

They said they thought Amadour Diallo had a gun, He didn't.

And there have been many, many others.

2003: While surrendering on his knees in front of four Las Vegas police officers, Orlando Barlow is shot with an assault rifle by officer Brian Hartman from 50 feet away. Hartman argued that he feared Barlow was feigning surrender and about to grab a gun. Barlow was unarmed.

2006: Just hours before his wedding, 23-year-old Sean Bell leaves the strip club hosting his bachelor party, jumps into a car with two friends, and is killed when police fire 50 shots into his vehicle, wounding his friends. Police say they opened fire after Bell rammed his car into an unmarked police van filled with plainclothes officers. They say they followed Bell and his friends outside the club suspecting that one person in their group had a gun. Referring to Bell and his friends, Mayor Bloomberg told the Associated Press "there is no evidence that they did anything wrong."

2009: On New Years morning, three Bay Area Rapid Transit officers pull 22-year-old Oscar Grant and four other black men off a train in Oakland. You can view what happened afterwards in this Youtube video. In it, now former-transit officer Mehserle can be seen shooting Grant in the back. During the trial, Mehserle argued that he thought Grant was reaching for a gun near his waistband.

As I type this, I'm listening to the Zimmerman bail hearing  where George himself took the stand and claimed he thought Trayvon was an adult and he didn't know if he was armed or not.

So Zimmy claims his assumption going into their confrontation was that Trayvon could be armed and he simply acted accordingly?

Just like Police did with McDade, and Dorismond and Diallo and hundreds upon hundreds of others I guess. Hmm.

Yeah, let's have more of that. Not.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Black people tried that once... (15+ / 0-)

When black people armed themselves in America out of fear, they don't get the NRA...they get the FBI and COINTELPRO shooting them dead in their beds while they slept.

All Trayvon Martin had was a bag of skittles and they managed to turn him into a dangerous juvenile delinquent.

  •  Let's assume that there are people (13+ / 0-)

who will shoot black people whether they are armed or not.

One solution is for black people to arm themselves and kill their attackers, vigilante style, and let the gutters overtop with blood.

The other would be for America to continue the difficult work of achieving racial harmony so that people don't get shot for the color of their skin.

Evidently O'Reilly and Coulter find the first alternative less threatening than the second.

How, precisely, are you going to reconcile yourself to your situation here and how you are going to communicate to the vast, heedless, unthinking, cruel, white majority, that you are here?  I'm terrified at the moral apathy -- the death of the heart which is happening in my country. These people have deluded themselves for so long, that they really don't think I'm human.  I base this on their conduct, not on what they say, and this means that they have become, in themselves, moral monsters. It's a terrible indictment -- I mean every word I say.  It doesn't matter any longer, and I'm speaking for myself, for Jimmy Baldwin, and I think I'm speaking for a great many Negroes too. It doesn't matter any longer what you do to me; you can put me in jail, you can kill me.  By the time I was 17, you'd done everything that you could do to me.  The problem now is, how are you going to save yourselves?"

Negroes with Guns, Robert Franklin Williams

First published in 1962, Negroes with Guns is the story of a southern black community's struggle to arm itself in self-defense against the Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups. Frustrated and angered by violence condoned or abetted by the local authorities against blacks, the small community of Monroe, North Carolina, brought the issue of armed self-defense to the forefront of the civil rights movement. Under the leadership of Robert F. Williams (1925-1996), Monroe became the test case of the right of blacks to armed self-defense when law and order broke down.

exactly the same -- "Negroes with Guns" -- and about half of it is dedicated to discussing Robert Williams:

The NRA opposed these discretionary gun permit laws and proceeded to grant NRA charters to blacks who sought to defend themselves from Klan violence -- including the great civil rights hero Robert F. Williams.

A World War II Marine veteran, Williams returned home to Monroe, N.C., to find the Klan riding high -- beating, lynching and murdering blacks at will. No one would join the NAACP for fear of Klan reprisals. Williams became president of the local chapter and increased membership from six to more than 200.

But it was not until he got a charter from the NRA in 1957 and founded the Black Armed Guard that the Klan got their comeuppance in Monroe.

Williams' repeated thwarting of violent Klan attacks is described in his stirring book, "Negroes With Guns." In one crucial battle, the Klan sieged the home of a black physician and his wife, but Williams and his Black Armed Guard stood sentry and repelled the larger, cowardly force. And that was the end of it.

As the Klan found out, it's not so much fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

        http://www.anncoulter.com/...

She goes on to quote the following passage from the preface to Williams' book:
I have asserted the right of Negroes to meet the violence of the Ku Klux Klan by armed self-defense -- and have acted on it. It has always been an accepted right of Americans, as the history of our Western states proves, that where the law is unable, or unwilling, to enforce order, the citizens can, and must act in self-defense against lawless violence.

When I was thinking back on those old Westerns, I also remembered how naive we were then.  The reason those shows were so popular was because we'd come so far.  Now I see what an illusion that was.

because you don't have to play "What If?" - it's already happening on urban streets.  It's fair to assume that most people in South Central or Central Detroit already have a gun - and are more than willing to use them.  And it's fair to assume everyone else knows that.  The result hasn't been a lowering of crime or gun violence, it's been a change in tactics leading from "gun fights" to "drive-by shootings".  From someone doing a window smash and grabbing a car to waiting until the driver themselves disables Lockjack and The Club, then bodily pulling them out of the car, from just breaking into a house when people are on vacation to doing Home Invasions while they're still in the house -  and it's led to more and more officer involved shootings, both where innocent people have been shot, and more Officers Have been Killed because the perps have guns too.

      Ain't nothing about it pretty.

      •  Well, the solution to gun violence (0+ / 0-)

        is more guns, right?  Right?

Honestly, the more I hear that we all need to arm ourselves against each other, the more I'm convinced that we have only barely evolved from our primate ancestors.  If I were ever to buy a gun, it would be to protect myself from the vigilantes whose numbers seem to increase like rabbits.

I know that my neighborhood can't compare with what you describe, but there are a lot of people who would be afraid to walk through here, let alone live here.  There is a little convenience store around the corner and it gets lots of traffic.  One evening, I was going in for a pack of smokes and a young AA man was coming out.  It's a narrow doorway and I stepped back to let him out.  He did the same and held the door for me (I'm a little old brown woman).  "C'mon in, li'l mama," said he.  I just had to smile.  This young man was tough as nails and would not have backed down from anyone for any reason, I'm sure.  Still, someone had taught him right and he deferred to an old woman.

Incidents like that give me hope, even when I hear things that sound suspiciously like gunshots in the night.
