Interesting story in the May issue of Harper's, about the rebuilding of the Jefferson Davis "Presidential Library" in Biloxi, Mississippi, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
Many interesting tidbits in the story, including about the movement by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to produce a commemorative license plate for Nathan Bedford Forrest, the slave trader who became a founding member of the KKK.
But what really struck me as odd was the funding sources for the rebuilding. FEMA has awarded The Sons $14.5 million for the project (Your tax dollars at work). "Only" $6 million of this has been actually claimed by the project administrators so far, who seem to prefer private donations.
Including $25,000 from The Donald! What the hell? Who knew Trump had a soft spot in his heart for the Confederacy? Or perhaps he's just currying favor with unreconstructed Southern bigots in the hope they'll support a future Presidential candidacy.
Passing strange, wouldn't you say?
