Well, hooray. There's been at least one meager consequence from Allen West's McCarthyesque assertion that 80 or so members of Congress are members of the Communist Party:
[Local NAACP] leaders invited the Republican from Plantation to give the keynote speech at its annual fundraiser in Martin County, the Freedom Fund Banquet. The theme was "Still Standing For Freedom and Equality," and they wanted to hear West speak about his rise to fame.

Instead, the NAACP chapter pulled the plug on the event Tuesday — four days before it was to be held at a Palm City country club.

The chapter president, Jerry Gore, specifically cited the "Communist" statement:
"That statement alone ... we do not represent that type of atmosphere," Gore told me Thursday.

The NAACP is a nonpartisan group. Hosting West after he tossed around such allegations would thrust the group into a very partisan realm, Gore said.

Meanwhile, West himself is continuing to make an ass of himself in other realms, thus continuing to assure his dominances as poster child for brick-stupid Millennial Republicanism:
Rep. Allen West warned Monday that reports of the FBI’s training manual being edited to scrap portions considered offensive to the Muslim community signaled an increasingly “one-way street” level of tolerance that could lead to “cultural suicide.”

“We have to understand when tolerance becomes a one-way street, it will lead to cultural suicide and we should not allow the Muslim Brotherhood-associated groups to be influencing our national security strategy,” the Florida Republican said on “Fox & Friends.”

Yes, because not being intentionally offensive to Muslim Americans is the same as destroying our way of life. Sure, whatever. I guess if your "culture" consists of treating all American Muslims like dirt, having the FBI revamp inappropriate materials does crimp your own style somewhat. Somehow. I think. No worries, I'm sure the brain trust at Fox & Friends ate it up.

What does Republicanism stand for these days? I have no idea. Bigotry seems to making a nice comeback, and fear of communists, union-members and hippies has really taken off. But it's the conspiracy theorizing coupled with the obvious, excruciating stupidity that makes people like Allen West the new face of the party. Put the economy in the hands of a guy who can't do math, like Paul Ryan. Put social conservatism in the hands of such obvious nuts as Peter King, Steve King, Michele Bachmann, and, sigh, Allen West. Whether Republicans are actively seeking out the dumb ones, or are they just purging all the smarter ones under the banner of that guy compromised that one time!, leaving only the do-nothings and know-nothings behind, I couldn't say.

Blast from the Past. At Daily Kos on this date in 2011:

The radical new law in Michigan that allows Gov. Rick Snyder to appoint emergency managers to take over cities, school districts, virtually any local government entity, also allows those managers to take over pension funds. Because of that, two state pension boards are challenging the new law.

Detroit’s city pension systems — the General Retirement System of the City of Detroit and the Police and Fire Retirement System of the City of Detroit — filed suit against Gov. Rick Snyder and state Treasurer Andy Dillon in federal court this week in an effort to block provisions of the Emergency Manager law that change the city charter and collective bargaining agreements and allow pension fund trustees to be removed.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I do think he'll get passed it tho'. Bennett would have survived if he could have gotten out of the convention.

The Republican I spoke of is name Mia Love and she's running against Matheson. My daughter was a Democratic delegate but she checked out a speech by Love (oppo research) and said she is quite a candidate. Good speaker and likable, daughter thinks that Matheson could easily fall to her.

Our state has been gerrymandered all to hell. Daughter is in Matheson's district but the next street is in Bishop's. I just think that Romney will be a big factor this year.

      •  It's a problem. (4+ / 0-)

The courts require people to cooperate and show up. Our legal system is based on that.

        I see both sides.

The problem is when someone tells you you don't owe something, you HAVE to get it in writing. Health care is an area where I think we have to be especially careful because the billing systems are so incompetent.

I paid a $ 50 copayment to the University of Washington when i saw the doctor. They sent me a bill for my 20% that my insurance didn't owe, and the $50. I sent them the 20% and my receipt for the $50 that I already paid with a letter explaining that.

They credited the 20% check and sent me another bill for $50.  It's almost impossible to reach someone in the billing office by phone, but I called 6 times and left 6 voicemail messages. Each message explained the situation in detail.  I also sent another letter via certified mail.

I finally received a message to disregard the $50 bill. For two months though, I continued to receive invoices for the $50.

I finally sent in another $50 because we were moving out of state soon and I was worried that this would not get resolved.

        I received a statement noting a -0- balance.

Two months later, I received-- forwarded to me at my new  house -- a $50 check from UWMC with a form letter that said I had submitted duplicate payment.

        I could only laugh.

The TV was set to ABC the night of the pilot and I was packing boxes, so I didn't get up to change it. Before the hour was over, I was hooked.

getting involved with with well..... any thing of value.

So take aware West's clear crazy and I may as well at least agree with him on principle that it is worrisome that any FBI document was being edited for religious reasons.  (Besides for informational purposes)

Republicans are not always wrong. A broken clock is right twice a day.

Their problem is constancy. They have no true value system just crazy. He complains about the Muslim sensibilities censoring the FBI manual. However he and his republican kind would likely be be one of the first in line to complain about Catholic sensibility violations.

But once again it is not wrong to worry about religious myths potentially interfering with the public good.

In-fact overall I think its good to worry about such things.

I don't know if you were being serious or snarking (if snark, it's not obvious), but Allen West is not the young man who went in to the military years ago.

I see no reason to suggest  that his psych evaluation was "fixed."  And it appears he earned his commission, as confounding as that may seem to some.

We can be outraged by the man and question his ability to hold office now. We can certainly look at his missteps in history and wonder why he has arrived here.

But that doesnt mean that those who were there when he first started out were corrupt or inept. And we should be careful of deriding the good that thousands of dedicated Army professionals just because Allen West is a complete mess unless we have evidence of something other than they happened to be there.

Of course, the only places they can cut are . . . Education, Police and Fire.

Whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or Independent, this list has to shock you.

Over the years, our politicians have created this enormous pork barrel of agencies that employ about as many people as the entire State of Alaska.

All of these people get salaries, medical coverage and pensions at the taxpayers expense.

Most likely many other states have the same problem!

    Pretty unbelievable, isn't it

I`m already against the next war.

    •  That's a silly list (1+ / 0-)
      Recommended by:

Not the stuff on it, the list itself.  It includes functional units within broader agencies, so it's totally arbitrary.  If you only listed the top-level agencies it would look pretty minimalist and elegant.

If you can list specific functions that the California government performs that it shouldn't be performing, either because they're not important or because the private sector could do them better or because Californians can't afford them, that's all for the good.  But listing entities without regard to whether they carry any significant marginal cost is a road to nowhere except a nihilist view of government, however progressive your intentions.  And if those agencies employ half a million people, which I take to be the approximate population of Alaska, let's keep in mind that California has way more than 40 million people.

But nobody's buying flowers from the flower lady.

        Thank you.
I`m not from the US & don`t know the extent of the needs of the government here.
I recvd this in an email & it really surprised me.
I seemed to notice redundancy in some cases, doing a cursory read of the list, so you may mean That when you say

It includes functional units within broader agencies, so it's totally arbitrary.

  •  Europeans Turning Against Austerity (1+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

Robin Wells has an opinion piece in the Guardian that comments on this. Via a link from her husband Paul Krugman. She closes by linking this revolt to the US Presidential campaign.

The reality of the eurozone's troubles should lend support to President Barack Obama's campaign against GOP presidential nominee presumptive Mitt Romney and congressional Republicans. It provides a demonstration that austerity is self-defeating, that fiscal stimulus is needed in a deeply depressed economy, that recovery from a financial crisis is a slow and halting process, and that by grasping the nettle immediately, the Obama administration has succeeded in stabilizing its financial sector – while the Europeans have made a hash of it.

Yet politics, especially in America, is never so easy. As with his recent campaign stop in which he blamed Obama for a factory closing which actually occurred during the Bush administration, Romney will blame Obama for every problem – no matter how tortured or fraudulent the logic. It would be a great irony if Obama, who has been far more supportive of expansionary fiscal policy than any European leader, is hurt by the blowback from austerity in the eurozone. But this is what can happen when voters are in a foul mood and opponents are unencumbered by the truth.

There is, however, another outcome possible. In this alternative, continued economic troubles force Obama to sharpen his game and focus on principles, in which he gives a robust defense of fiscal stimulus, of the importance of the social safety net, explains how government spending can be a force for good. In fact, the events of the past few years have almost uniformly supported Obama's world-view and Democratic policies. But in order to win in November, he must fight for them now.

The left in the States has always looked to Europe as a model. We haven't been able to on this issue in the last few years as Germany has led the way in proposing the wrong macroeconomic solutions. If Obama takes up Wells suggestion, he could lead a progressive revolt that would gather support worldwide.
