I'm so excited!
My wife,
Tonia,
and I
just completed
a small home improvement project.
Below the fold:
We have four bookcases,
purchased years ago.
They are black,
and they measure
72" tall,
18" wide,
and
12" deep.
We recently moved into a room
in her brother's house,
a room with a 9' high ceiling.
We mounted the bookcases,
side by side,
way up against the ceiling.
Then we pushed our king sized bed
under the bookcases.
Here are the details
regarding how we secured the bookcases to the wall:
I purchased two 2"x6" boards,
six feet long.
I cut both of them in half,
giving me four boards,
each about three feet long.
I found the studs in the wall in the area within the width of the bed.
I mounted the four boards to the wall.
I drilled holes in the boards,
and used 3" long
fine thread
sheetrock screws,
four screws for each board.
Then,
we drilled holes at sharp angles,
through the sides,
top,
and bottom,
of the particle board bookcases.
Then,
my brother-in-law,
Issac,
lifted the bookcases,
one by one,
up to the ceiling,
and I installed the screws.
We put three screws through the right side of the first one,
two high,
and one low,
and two through the top,
and two through the bottom shelf.
I later realized,
the greatest lasting strength
is from the screws through the side,
because the vertical side of the bookcase
is resting on the screws,
while the screws in the top and bottom
only give us a little particle board
resting atop each screw.
We attached the second bookcase
to the first
with six shorter screws
run through shelf peg holes,
from right to left,
hardly noticeable.
This means that the security of either bookcase's mount
is given to both.
We also put all the same screws in the second one,
three in the right upright,
two in the top,
two in the bottom.
We left a gap in the middle,
top allow access to a wall outlet,
and then mounted the other two in the same way.
The appearance is that of
magical,
floating,
levitating bookcases,
hovering about ten inches above
the head of our bed.
By the way,
we sleep with our heads at the other end,
so,
only our feet
have a chance of hitting the bottoms of the bookcases.
Thanks for reading.
