Only in the mixed up logic of Republicans is water dangerous and bullets are a right. So if you are going to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, feel free to carry a concealed weapon, but don’t you dare bring a water pistol. Someone might get wet.
Although Tampa Mayor Bob Buckthorn requested that handguns be banned downtown during the convention, Gov. Rick Scott insisted that would be a violation of Second Amendment Rights.
Tampa officials are expecting thousands of protesters to descend on the Florida metropolis for the GOP convention. While no handguns will be allowed inside the convention, which is being protected by the Secret Service, concealed carry license-holders will be able to carry their weapons in the streets surrounding the convention.
They will not, however, be able to have "super soaker" water guns, sticks, poles, portable shields or glass bottles.
Buckhorn said last month that the state law, which prohibits the city from temporarily banning handguns, makes the city "look silly" because officials can prohibit water guns but not real ones, The Associated Press reported.
"There is no reason to have a concealed firearm in downtown Tampa that week," Buckhorn said in Wednesday's statement. "And, to be clear, I am far less concerned with those who have concealed weapons permits than the ones who may somehow acquire a weapon and use it to create mayhem."
Concealed weapons aren’t weapons? Republican logic always escapes me. So while handguns can not be carried into the convention, they can be carried and concealed all around it. But don’t dare try to bring a water gun anywhere close to the scene or the police and Secret Service might jump all over you.
James Davis, a spokesman for the Republican National Convention, said he believes the Convention will be safe and handguns won't be a security problem, because there will be lots of local police and the Secret Service around. Just make sure those bulges in your pants are really guns and don't shoot water.
Gun rights but no water gun cooling rights for the people? Can’t be trying to cool yourself down in these heated political arenas during the hot August Republican Convention time in Florida.
