UPDATE: Event postponed. Sorry.
Shockwave
Paul Butterfield, a better Democrat, is running for California State Senate for the 35th District. He is a Single Payer supporter and he is running against Rod Wright. And the more I know him the better he looks.
Rod Wright, his opponent, really should change his name to Mr. Wrong because he;
A) Has a lot of baggage, a whole lot. I have been saying this about Mr. Wright but it turns out he is even Mr. Worst. He is the NRA favorite son in California and supported the "stand your ground legislation". Ugggghh!
B) Was one of 6 blue dog Senators who did not vote for SB 810 on January 31st. Only 2 votes were needed to get Single Payer in California. (Schwarzenegger vetoed it twice)
For years I have been a Single Payer activist in California and I believe that a Paul Butterfiled win will accelerate the legislative way. Putting a proposition in the ballot, the initiative way, may take much longer IMHO.
So if you live on the West Side of Los Angeles or in the Greater San Fernando Valley and you want to meet Paul and other Kossacks (I am bringing nyceve ) join us at the Brewer residence in Sherman Oaks.
Place: 5518 Ventura Canyon Avenue Sherman Oaks CA 91401
Time: 4PM
The new 35th Senate District is safely Democratic and very ethnically mixed; 22% African American, 12% Asian, 53% Hispanic, 11% White. It covers Watts, Willowbrook, Hawthorne, Compton, Carson, East Torrance, Wilmington, West Long Beach and San Pedro. Paul has lived for years in San Pedro and is a teacher. He has no political background other than being a chair of his union local (UTLA). He lived in Japan a couple of years teaching English. Perhaps this will get the strong Asian American communities in his district to at least listen. I met his family and they are great. I am a Latino and I believe that he would be great for the Latino community in his district. Most of his students are Latinos.
But we need everything; door knockers, phone callers, bloggers, contact, donations, event organizers, endorsements and friends. So come on down to Sherman Oaks on Sunday and meet Paul, nyeve and other Kossacks.
Let me know if you need a ride.
These are the 6 blue dogs that derailed Single Payer in California back in January;
