GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support series for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. We avoid discussion of political issues. If you are quitting or even thinking about quitting, please -- join us! You can add GUS to your stream by clicking on the ♥ next to the GUS tag. The GUS Library at dKosopedia is organically evolving, and stocked with free-range information: quit-smoking links, helpful GUS writing tips, and the GUS buddy list.
A message to all quitters: You don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as practice for the real quit.
Buongiorno, miei cari Gusseronis!! Let me slip into something more comfortable and I'll be right back. I want to talk to you about my passion -- food -- and how smoking Devasta le papille gustative (devastates the taste buds).
Ciao ancora!!!
Ahhhh, now I'm more comfortable. So, let me share with you my words of wisdom from 1971.
Digression: Table Manners and Smoking
I always wonder why there should be so many table manners observed today, which are quite irrelevant, while we forget about others which should be sacrosanct.

It is perfectly reasonable that one shouldn't smoke at the table. Smoking I the most damaging thing there is from the point of view of taste and flavor. The taste of tobacco and smoke spell ruin to the tasste buds and prevents you from appreciating flavors. . . . The thing I most dislike is that it is usually women who are the first to light cigarettes at the table. Even the most fervent men smokers usually wait for the woman to open the smoking interval during meals. A useful alibi. And the women accept without ever giving this hypocritical homage a thought.
There used to be a time when even the most obsessed smokers didn't dare light a cigarette at the table. . . I am sorry to say, the United States set a very bad example, which spread and spread.
And the wrong of it is that the Americans were the first to realize the harm caused by smoking; hence the anti-tobacco campaign, which is one of the most thriving and effective in the world.

Will you join me in spreading the good news and campaign for the restitution of the veto against smoking at mealtimes?
from In the Kitchen with Love, Doubleday and Company, 1972 -- American translation of In Cucina Con Amore, Rizzoli Editore, 1971. (I can't find the html code for the bold so I'm leaving it -- sorry).
I have been asked many times, in many languages: "Sophia, how do you stay so beautiful?" I tell them: "All you see, I owe to pasta and not smoking."
Ciao for now, miei buoni amici.

Recipes & Memories:
Almost from the beginning, interviewers have asked me what diet I follow to stay in shape. It amuses me to see their expressions when I answer, "Pasta." It is only a slight exaggeration. I adore pasta and eat it almost every day.
I'm a cookbook nut -- kitchen porn. I just acquired both of Sophia's books and they are marvelous -- the first, not laid out like a traditional American cookbook. The recipes are more chatty and require the cook to pay close attention to organization. The second is beautifully laid out and includes lots of pictures and the story of her family. Very tough childhood during WWII and clear remembrance of hunger.
According to an old Italian adage, the best condiment for any food is hunger. No delicacies or frills can make food as appetizing as an empty belly can. Those of us who were children during the Second World War can bear prime witness to this great truth. Hunger -- real, visceral hunger -- forced us to face many dangers in those years, but it also gave us great courage, and even today I remain in awe of what we experienced.

I am more acutely aware of flavors now -- and my awful tendency to over-salt my food. I've cut back dramatically. I am more confident in my seasonings and the chemistry involved in the marriage of herbs, spices and organic foods.
Today is my 3 month anniversary!! 2,171 cigs not smoked. $922.71 saved.
Cheers, dears!!
