You expect to hear out-and-out lunacy from religious-right luminaries. But one leading religious-right figure went off the deep end even by its standards today.
Paul Cameron of the Family Research Institute is a quack psychologist who is frequently touted as an "expert" by fundies, even though his work has been rejected out of hand by legitimate researchers. Earlier today, he appeared on VCY America, a network of Christian radio stations in the Midwest, and suggested that President Obama's recent announcement of support for marriage equality is proof he might be gay himself (h/t to PFAW's Right Wing Watch).
Later on, Cameron said that ex-gay therapy doesn't work, and that the only way to deal with gays is to have them locked up in the name of "protecting our children."
As hard as this may be to believe, this is mild stuff by Cameron's standards. According to his SPLC dossier, he once suggested that parents allow their kids to experiment with straight sex (though not intercourse) in order to kill off any gay tendencies before they show themselves later on. He has also advocated throwing gays in "concentration camps."
Granted, most of the people who listen to a show like this probably wouldn't vote for Obama anyway. But suggesting that straight people can't support gay rights? Staggering.
