We say we want better Democrats here all the time.  I am here to tell you about Wenona Benally Baldenegro, running for CD1 in AZ, who would be the first Native American candidate ever in the U.S. Congress, and the first Native American from Arizona to serve in Congress. She is not only a beautiful person, she has a beautiful mind, a graduate of Law and Public Policy from Harvard and also from The University of Arizona
Class of 2011 · LLM · Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy.  She attended Monument Valley HS in Kayenta.  And she’s a Proud Progressive.

The AZ Democratic Party seems intent on shoving fake Democrat Anne Kirkpatrick down our throats, who lost to a teabagger in large part because Democrats refused to vote for her because she betrayed us at every turn. I would not vote for her!  Now we have a choice, and Wenona is the best Democrat, a progressive Democrat.  I would like DK to do what we always do at DK and help get her money and attention, because she is the RIGHT CANDIDATE.

Great example of their ultimate lameness-- Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-1) was defeated in 2010 because she was one of the worst, most useless Members of Congress and Democrats didn't turn out to vote for her and let a teabagger get in. In 2008 when she first won election, for an open seat she got 155,791 votes (56%) against the Republican's 109,924, tying him in the biggest county and winning in 6 of the remaining 7. After one term of voting like a Republican, Democrats stayed home in droves and in 2010 all she managed was 99,233 votes (44%) against 112,816 for the Republican. This time she lost by a landslide in Yavapai, the biggest county, and of the remaining 7 only won 3.
Flagstaff is a young, progressive, city, home of NAU.  They are the largest population in CD 1.  Sedona is also in CD 1. They would not vote for Kirkpatrick.  Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.  Kirkpatrick could not fool us twice.

A far better choice would be strong, independent progressive, Wenona Baldenegro, but the DCCC decided to not leave anything to chance-- or the Democrats in the area-- and moved this week to bolster the pathetic candidacy of sure loser, Kirkpatrick.

The progressive in the race, Wenona, told me publicly what dozens of candidates are telling me off the record-- that Steve Israel and his cronies are a bunch of flat-out liars.

"Across the country, the self-appointed kingmakers in Washington are trying to tell the American people who should represent them in Congress. We will not let them anoint candidates for us; the people will decide who they want to represent them. I am truly humbled by the immense support that I have received from the people of my district, and I am proud to be running a grassroots campaign that is not in the pocket of corporate money and ALEC lobbyists. I will continue my campaign to give the people of Arizona the type of representation that they deserve, and to be the first Native American woman to ever serve in the U.S. Congress."

"We want to say look, we want a change, we want an opportunity to bring our voice to the table and right now, that voice is being choked out by the Arizona Democratic party." Ann Kirkpatrick is being bankrolled by ALEC, CCA, and the payday loan industry, and she supports SB1070 and skipped her vote on the DREAM Act, in 2010. Despite this, the Arizona Democratic Party has done everything it can to sabotage and suppress the campaign of Wenona Benally Baldenegro for Congress, who would be the first Native American candidate ever in the U.S. Congress, and the first Native American from Arizona to serve in Congress. Enough is enough!
About Wenona: supporter of  Indigenous Alliance Without Borders Benefit, and the Navajo Hopi Water Rights Forum at ASU which she is attending right now. Quotes on her FB page:
"¡Sólo el pueblo salva al pueblo!" - The People

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." -John Quincy Adams

"All social movements are founded by, guided by, motivated and seen through by the passion of individuals. "
- Margaret Mead

"Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz." ["Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace."]
- Benito Pablo Juárez

"In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same."
- Albert Einstein

"You can't lead the people if you don't love the people. You can't save the people, if you don't serve the people."
Dr. Cornel West

I am so impressed by Wenona and support her totally.  She fights for the Native people, the Hispanic people and all the people of AZ.  I know my friends are going to vote for her.  I would not vote for Kirkpatrick last time and neither did they.  That is why she lost.  The Democratic Party cannot keep giving us Republicans in Democratic clothing and expect us to be fooled.  JT Ready, a notorious White Supremacist, was running in Pinal County as a Democrat in AZ when he killed himself and four others.  It is not so easy to pull the wool over Democrats eyes. Do we really want, not only More, but  Better Democrats?  I do.  I support Wenona.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
