This is Gabby Gifford's seat. This special election is a place holder  for old CD8, but it counts. Ron Barber, who was shot along with Giffords, is the Dem candidate. The GOP candidate is a nightmare. Jesse Kelly campaigned against Giffords in 2010 with, among other things, a fundraiser where people could pay to shoot a fully automatic M16 to 'target Giffords' in the election. He's  not a very smart or well spoken man, but he does know how to parrot Tea Party talking points. Guaranteed , he will vote the wrong way on pretty much anything put before him. He will also be the candidate for the new CD-1.
Kelly rails against the stumulus ,even though he ran back to Texas after 2010 to work for his dad's mega construction company, which has lived on stimulus funds for the past 4 years. he's campaigning on a promise that he will lower gas prices, because he wants to extract the hell out of anything and everything.  The list goes on with immigration, women's rights, social security and medicare, gay rights.... everything.

Please  Arizonans, do not sit this one out.We cannot give Kelly the momentum. If you know anyone in AZ ,in district 8, parts of Tucson, Green Valley and SE AZ, call them up and  convince them to vote for Barber. He is a sensible ,solid Democrat who is a good fit with most of the district.
this was a close race last time, and it will be this time too.
I know Wisconsin was a big blow, but the  work continues. Every race matters. and we can't let the Walker win look like the start of something.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

can't vote for Barber, but I am rooting for him. Jesse Kelly dodging his past made him look appallingly stupid in late May, although to conservatives that may be a selling point.

  •  More on CD-8 special: (6+ / 0-)

HuffPo has a story on Gabby today HERE.
Tucson's local paper, The Arizona Daily Star, asked the candidates to respond to questions a couple of days ago, here are the results. Note Kelly's idiotic responses. If there were no TeeVee ads, if people had to choose based only on written responses, Kelly would have no chance.
This morning's Letters to the Editor had some reactions, HERE.
Thanks for posting. I feel pretty confident about the upcoming election but we can't take it for granted. Every vote counts. Party at the Rialto Sat. night.

  •  My last vote in CD-8. (5+ / 0-)

For the next election, we will be in CD-1. Already donated time and money to Ron Barber, one of the nicest, most genuine people around. Already voted.

Now it's just a question of how many dumbasses voted against their best interests in order to vote for a dumbass.

Judging from the ratio of Barber/Kelly letters-to- the-editor in today's AZ Daily Star (allegedly they print letters at the same ratio they receive them), it would appear the dumbasses are not winning.... or maybe they just aren't smart enough to write, which would be scary but all too plausible.

So the question is whether southern Arizona really is any different from the rest of Arizona.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.....

OK. And now we begin the part of the show where we pull out individual words and phrases of the commenter to try to determine the "real" meaning of the comment.... let the games begin.

  •  Voted Early for Barber. (5+ / 0-)

Jesse Kelley has the exact credentials the Rethugs want.

High School graduate.  Four years in the Marines, with a tour in Iraq.  Then he went to work for his father's construction company.  Calling them "mega" is a misnomer.  They do about 60-70 million a year and are a company that does underground water. sewer, gas lines.  He has been a project manger for them.

So he's got some military, not very educated, some business, a good Christian fundy, and easily lead around be the nose.  They love him.

Barber is a good guy, and both are getting a lot of money spent on TV and roadside ads.  The theme of the campaign has been "I won't hurt old people".  Kelley's stance 2 years ago was "I hate old people".

     I'm not terrible optimistic, though.

after I got it. Hopefully when Kelly loses a second time he'll slink off never to be heard from again.

But also hopefully Matt Heinz stays in the new CD2 primary, he'll have my vote - Matt Heinz wouldn't have to think about it for a day when someone asks him who he'll vote for for President.

I don't have the numbers at hand, but the R's have to be running at least 5 to 1 on the airwaves based on the number of ads, two or three fluff jobs for Jesse, one insinuating that Barber is just another Democrat and we all KNOW about them don't we, and then a generic hit piece on every principle that Dems hold dear, twisted into funhouse mirror mode.  When are we gonna see a Dem ad with some cojones....

Who saved the jobs and who gives a shit about jobs... something pithy... like the number of jobs programs that have been initiated and sponsored by R's... zero, initiatives at the state  Who says that there's too much government but wants to let your boss know about your sex life?  Who has REALLY gone after the terrorists rather than pay it lip service.

When did things stop getting better? right after you same knuckleheads voted in the R's who promised a laser like focus on jobs jobs jobs but has translated into abortion, birth control and austerity.

Totally not impressed with Barber. Yes, I'll be voting for him because Kelly is completely despicable. But Barber is an even bigger blue dog than Gabby was. And having him in the race caused several better people to drop out, from the "sympathy" factor.

Barber does not represent the "better democrats" we're supposed to be fighting for. He's just the only Democrat left in the race.

is due to the situation at hand.

i.e. when Gabby announced she was stepping down and how this is coinciding with the soon to be redrawn districts.  Could our local and statewide Dem machine have been better informed?  How much blame do we put on Gabby for making her announcement when she did and the pool of viable decent candidates was large and those that were ready to attempt to pick up the torch?

I can understand not being enamored of Barber but I can also understand the deference that is being paid to him in this situation.

Thankfully, he isn't Jesse Kelly (or Frank Antonori or any of the other candidates that ran for the slot)
