It ain't me, babe.
Pennsylvania Democrats are attacking the Republican U.S. Senate nominee over comments he made at a primary campaign forum where he indicated he wanted to "hang" U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D), a remark the Republican said was taken out of context.
Democrats are using a video clip of Republican Tom Smith at a forum during the March primary campaign where he used the word "hang" after talking about Casey's policies. Smith quickly dialed back from the comment at the time.
"We will hang him," Smith said. "I should not say that."
Now, as it stands, I'm kinda hard to miss -- big hairy guy, usually in shorts and a T-shirt, beating on a guitar and singing silly stuff and just trying to make the world a touch more pleasant. If dKos is a family, I'm the fat hippie uncle with the really cool toys.
Thus, I don't think there's any real chance of being mistaken for this doofus, but... there are three Tom Smiths in my immediate family (me, Dad, my late Grandpa [it stops with me, by the way -- if I ever become involved in the naming of a male child, I will push for Michael, Aidan, or Snuffaluffagus {"Snuffy" for short}]).
There's also Tom Smith the Hollywood Foley artist, Tom Smith the comic book colorist, at least three other musicians named Tom Smith, and all these guys.
Fer cryin' out loud, there's a child-maiming bone disease named after me [pdf].
But it would never, ever occur to me to threaten death by hanging. Especially out loud, in a public forum, in front of the people I am supposedly representing to the best of my ability.
Here's the video, by the way:
And here's me.
So, if there is any confusion, I am the comedy musician. Not the kids' folkie, not the guitar wizard, not the sound FX guy, not the colorist, not any of the athletes or medical people or politicians, and very definitely not the shmuck in PA who said "we will hang [Bob Casey]" and then tried to take it back.
