As has been elsewhere reported here the High Park fire is completely out of control.

That diary posted the link between the fire and climate change. I want to look at Governor Romney's comment concerning government employees on Friday. More below the fold:

At the press conference this morning our governor mentioned we are using 1/3 of the firefighting resources of the entire country. The citizens of Fort Collins and Larimer County are grateful for the courage and compassion of our firefighters. Governor Romney on the other hand doesn't even view their jobs as "real".

Update on the fire: as of the time of this writing the fire is at 14,000 acres and over 1,000 evacuation calls have been made, and over 250 firefighters on the scene. You can track the fire through the Forest Service here.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

jobs that 'we' (the general public) doesn't want them to be doing.  "They" just don't get it.

The US Military are gov't workers, they're doing some things I don't want them to be doing on my dime.

Isn't that and getting government off our backs the solution to everything?

Is this where we want to take our rhetoric and spin?

    Really, guys?

No one is gonna change their vote for prez because some folks say "governor Romney on the other hand doesn't even view their jobs as "real". \

Let get some nitty-gritty issues going on to put forth to our electorate.

Colorado is a swing state for this election. The people are very grateful for the firefighters. I don't think people appreciate how very, very bad things are right here. Coming into the weekend Romney's rhetoric would put him on the defensive. Coming into tonight I am hearing Katrinaesque statements being made. This only plays to Obama's advantage if he puts into action his words. Paying the firefighters is in Congress' hands. Helping get the resources on the ground needed to fight this fire is purely in the President's hands.

      •  Firefighters getting paid (0+ / 0-)

Our country has had an excellent history of making sure our firefighters are paid and at most excellent wages...including overtime and in many cases hazardous duty pay.

That has not changed.  That isn't being suggested by ANYONE to be changed.   What IS being changed is the number of firefighters that are "on duty" and "active" at any given time so as to hopefully cut the expenditure for that group.  I don't know all of the details but I do know that there is absolutely NO WAY either party would ever be able to "cut" firefighters to the point that we put our communities and/or states at risk.  It's just not something that can happen or is happening.

I'd like to see some evidence that any cuts have/do put our country's communities or other elements in our society at risk when it shouldn't be.

Just don't see it.  And no...this is NOT a troll post or something you should HR because it questions what is being put out there.

He cannot afford to live in the community in which he serves. He is also struggling to get his daughter through college. Average Firefighter salaries for job postings nationwide are 18% lower than average salaries for all job postings nationwide.

Not a good story.  But, is this the norm or is this a rarity...something that has more to it than just the salary of the firefighter?

            •  Also friend of a fire captain in Fort Collins (0+ / 0-)

He related to me how firefighting is a calling and they don't go in it for the money. Most firefighters eshew careers that pay much more. He also noted how their health care is inadequate given their on the job injuries. The median income of a fire fighter is barely over $40000.
