The 2 "leading" candidates for Governor in Washington state held a debate in Spokane Washington this evening.  The Democratic candidate Jay Inslee I felt did rather well against his opponent - Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

What they looked and sounded like. Your real feeling about who seemed to come out strongest, and who the crowd responded best to?

How much of the Republican party line did McKenna spew, or did he gloss it over under other stuff?

Was Inslee's approach candid, intelligent, strong? Did he call out McKenna for basically leading the pack of Republican attorneys general who are trying to take down Obama's healthcare plan?

This is campaign is a major on for Washington State. If someone like McKenna gets in on Koch & Co. money, it could be devastating. We already have the Wisconsin lesson and don't need another one here.

the republicans have a reasonable chance of gaining control of the state legislature, so the damage would likely be more limited.

Not that that is any reason not to push to elect Inslee of course....

If the state supreme court overturns the 2/3rds majority initiative and allows for raising of taxes with a simple majority then having Inslee in office could become quite important.

We have real conservadems in this state and they went into cahoots with the Republican MINORITY to take over the budget process this past session.

You combine this coalition with Rob McKenna and you'll get Wisconsin style looting of our state.

one thing, Inslee hasn't been on my side of the state ( Eastern), and I was also looking to hear more of his views. Overall I thought he handled himself quite well. I liked his response about jobs, about his concern for the cost of higher education, about the environment, and his stand on health care. Although here I would have liked him to have taken a stronger stance than he did. He really didn't say much at all about the "Obama care" health plan, but since his opponent Mckenna claimed the only aspect of the plan he was against, the mandate, I again, liked his response. He asked Mr. McKenna how the hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians without insurance would fare. Mckenna gave the typical Republican line of being for a stupid " insurance exchange" which we really already have, and then he also mentioned private health insurance accounts of some type. It was all in line with what the Repugs. claim they want to happen if Obamacare is repealed. But overall I thought he handled himself well, and I am pleased to report that in the area of fundraising, he is right up there with McKenna, both having raised just over $6million dollars. Difficult to tell who fared better with the crowd, as they did not respond until the final seconds, which was what the moderator requested, but given that my burg of Spokane, is purplish, to purplish red in color, I am fairly certain the crowd favored McKenna. I will continue to follow future debates and post comments.
