Many years ago a group of folks, upon invitation, decided to settle in the area now known as Texas, and as they have done in the past, they decided to take the land for themselves. Stealing was a part of their culture. Ask the Indians. Might was right, but at times they paid the price. The battle of the Alamo was one of those times and they are at it again this time stealing our rights to vote.
The story of the Alamo is portrayed by historians as a heroic battle for freedom, when it could be portrayed as a couple of hundred militarily stupid people picking a fight with a couple of thousand well armed Mexicans wondering why no one was coming with support, supplies, or reinforcements after they decided to steal Mexico's land. (DUH!) In the end General Santa Anna and his thousand Mexican forces kicked the living hell out of them, stacked their dead bodies in a pile and burned them to ashes. That is what happens when you steal another man's land especially in Texas. Usually.
Later "Remember the Alamo!" became the battle cry for the Texas Revolution. It was a lot easier to say and more catchy than "Remember when we tried to pick a fight with a few thousand well armed Mexicans by stealing their land and got the living hell beaten out of us!". Now another group of folks, called republicans and tea party "patriots", are stealing from Hispanics, Blacks, the elderly, and students by taking their rights to vote away through illegal purging of voter rolls and voter ID bills. The Houston Chronicle has the story:
"How can you suspend someone without notice? To me we should be actively engaging people - we should not be adding any barrier to vote," said Garcia, who works to boost voter participation of Hispanics nationwide as president of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.
Maybe one of these days the Hispanics in this great State will join forces with African Americans, students, Asian Americans, the elderly, teachers, fireman, women, and every other individual who is having their American right to vote stolen from them and ask the question "Remember the Alamo?"
Remember the last time a group of people tried to steal something from us? Remember how we stood up and kicking the living hell out of them? Remember the Alamo?
The invaders are stealing from us again. Many people lost their lives defending our right to vote. We have sent men and women to their deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan to give them the right to vote without harassment, without fear, and without question. Maybe it is time we honor them by standing up and defending our American right to vote without harassment, without fear, and without asking any questions.
Remember the Alamo!
