If you were at Netroots Nation, you heard Darcy Burner remind us that one in three woman in America will have an abortion at some point in their lives.  Given a population in excess of 300 million, half of which are female, that is something over fifty million.

You experienced her quietly asking women in the audience if they were comfortable to stand and acknowledge having had an abortion.    As Digby, John and Howie and the Leadership of Blue America put it in an email that went out yesterday, reflecting a post on their site,

One by one at first, and finally all at once, women throughout that huge crowd, in front of all their peers and friends, stood up. That's not an easy thing to do in this culture, even among friends. The right has made it a dishonorable, solitary act, borne in silence, subject to fear and social stigma.
But then Darcy did more.  Quoting again from the Blue America email,
she asked all of those who supported those women to stand up. Everyone in the room came to their feet. There was no sustained applause and no celebration, just a simple public acknowledgement of solidarity and sincere support for the women in all of our lives who have made this choice.
The meaning of this is simple, quoting again
This is the essence of leadership --- a candidate for office taking a stand on one of the most contentious issues of our time, reminding the people of what they have in common, empowering those who need to be empowered and asking for solidarity from their friends and neighbors.
If you are one of the fifty million, do you not want Darcy's voice speaking for you and for all women in Congress?

If you are one who supported those women who stood, whether you were in the hall and stood yourself or only heard about it afterwards, will you not stand with Darcy now?

We have a chance to elect a real progressive to the House.   Establishment Dems are trying to crush Darcy, because they cannot control her.  They are backing an establishment figure who has said she does not think Democrats compromise enough and made clear she views herself not as a progressive, which Darcy clearly is, but as a "New Democrat."  This women, Suzan DelBene, can dump millions of her own and her husband's money into the race.

That is about to start.  The polling data has shown that Darcy has the most support among the Democrats in the race.  She won a plurality of the delegates to the State Democratic Party Convention from the 1st Congressional District.  She is the clear choice of the people.  But that can change if she cannot get her message out, if she cannot buy advertising.  With a primary in August, commitments for time must be made by the end of this month.  Darcy need our financial support now.

I am going to ask two things of you.

First,

Give whatever you can do Darcy Burner, and do it NOW.   I'm not just asking, I am modeling.  I have just retired, we have just incurred some unexpected financial obligations with the passing of my mother-in-law.  Money is tight for us.  But I just gave Darcy another $100.

Second, help Darcy by letting others know she needs their support.

You can direct them to her website where they can find out where she stands on the issues, and contribute.

When you follow the link to contribute (which is through Act Blue) you will have the ability to tweet and email to others indicating support.

And perhaps you can help keep this post visible to this community by recommending it.

Darcy stood on principle at Netroot Nation.

Now she needs us to stand with her.

Please help.

Peace.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

She won a plurality of the delegates to the State Democratic Party Convention from the 1st Congressional District.  She is the clear choice of the people.
Seems to me the clear choice of the people are only known as the results of open elections and primaries, not from insider political conventions.

Sorry.. that statement just seemed to jump out at me as being rather ironic.

  •  I have sent money to Darcy (4+ / 0-)

every time she has run and the first two times were heartbreakers.  As they say, maybe "third time's the charm."  I certainly hope so!  We need her in Congress.  We need her in WA to buck up our other Democrats and we need her kind of frank progressivism to challenge the conservative populism that dominates the 1st CD in WA.  Please listen to teacherken's request.  Darcy is the hard punching, razor sharp progressive we desperately need in Congress.  I'd personally love to see Alan Grayson and Darcy in Congress.  I suspect some of those old Republicans might just die of apoplexy!  So how much would you pay to see that happen?  Send it to Darcy, now.

AKA "Cathy McMorris Rogers - - What can I do to move the crazy further right, Land" who would love to see Darcy as part of our Congressional Delegation.

CD-1 is Eastern WA - once solidly Democratic (Tom Foley) and is an elegant example of the diminution of unions.  Once a logging, mining, manufactoring hub, it is now the wealthy urban areas that vote Dem and lose to that set of former union, good pay, paid leave, pension. . . etc that now continually votes against itself.

We need Darcy to balance the rest of the state out.

when I lived in Spokane in the mid 80s.  A really decent man, and a good Speaker of the House, replaced by a right wing nutter who never amounted to much.  Never could believe that  Spokane would throw away such an important position and decent guy for, well, what?  I felt the same way when Idaho replaced Church with, can't even remember who the Senators for Idaho are now.  If we don't get dark money out of politics we'll never get decent folks like Foley and Church and Darcy, and if we don't get Darcy in we'll never get dark money out.  Hell of a conundrum we're in.

  •  Glad to see this, Ken (4+ / 0-)

Having supported her previous campaign and already supported her in this one, I was delighted to hear her in Providence.  She made a number of very good points in a unique fashion and was most impressive to me.  She also made several points in a morning "newsdump" (with Lizz Winsted among others competing for the mic) which were noteworthy.

Ms Burner is indeed a candidate most worthy of our support, and like you, I contributed again on returning home.

  •  Question (0+ / 0-)

Is there some reason(s) why Ms. Burner is not a lock in a state where Obama crushed McCain by nearly 17 points in 2008?

    Seattle Times from June 17:

Darcy Burner's brand of rabble-rousing liberalism sharpened after spending 2-1/2 years as a progressive activist in Washington, D.C. Running for Congress a third time, she leads among Democrats, but her style makes some in her party "nervous."

        just did some reading;

Looks like the 1st congressional district (a new district) is crowded, candidate-wise.

DelBene is a former VP at Microsoft. probably made a ton of money from MS stock (not necessarily a bad thing- so did a lot of people in that area.)

What makes Burner a significantly better candidate than DelBene?

with top two in each going on to general election, even if same party.

Only 1 Republican running, he's pretty much guaranteed a slot

one election for current lines of district for unexpired part of Jay Inslee's term

one election for term beginning Jan 2013 in newly drawn district.
