(The title is snark, I realize this is not breaking news, or even just regular news, but I did find this incident interesting)
I work in an office building and typically sort our companies mail every day, among other things. The company I work for is owned by a private equity firm. In this office, there are about 60 people. It's a pretty even split, about 50% Democrats and 50% Republicans, at least from the informal conversations I've had with people, that's what I gathered.
I was sorting the mail this morning and found a letter, to our CEO, who is a partner in the private equity firm that owns my company. It was from the Romney campaign - titled "2012 Presidential Survey" and stamped "Immediate Response Needed!".
Now, I'm not really supposed to go around reading other people's mail, especially the CEO's, but from the quick glance I got - the letter started out as "Dear Fellow Republican," and went on to state that the recipients opinions were "very important" to Mitt, please fill out the enclosed survey (so he knows how to effectively pander to the only people he finds important?).
Unfortunately I didn't get to read the entire letter or survey. I thought about swiping the whole envelope, so I could read more, not like our CEO is going to miss a piece of junk mail, but we have security cameras everywhere and it didn't seem like the greatest idea.
Anyways, there are a few things about this letter that I find telling. First, our CEO commutes into this state a few times a month, he's not here on a regular basis and he doesn't even live in Ohio. He's not registered to vote in Ohio. The state where he is registered to vote is not a swing state.
Second, why was only the only person in our office to receive this survey partner at a private equity firm? Is Romney this blatent about only caring what rich white guys like him think. I don't know when the last time he checked was, but rich, conservative, white guys only make up a tiny fraction of the likely voters in this country, so exclusively pandering to them and their needs seems short sighted and well, out of touch.
Third, there are other Republicans in this office, that are "well off" but probably not "filthy rich" (like the CEO), there are at least 3 executives that I know of, who are not part of the private equity firm, but are 1)wealthy 2)white 3)males 4)Republicans - they don't get a survey either?
Really, I know I shouldn't be surprised. But really, Mitt, have you no class at all? At least have the common courtesy to act like you care about all voters, regardless of their income levels or skin color or gender, at least until you get elected.
