When a bicyclist completely ignores all traffic laws, bad things happen.
It is this arrogance that causes me to intensely dislike some bicyclists and why I get a little pissy when bicyclists whine about autos not yielding to them.
Bicyclists must obey the same traffic laws as the motorists.
This means bicyclists stop - full stop - at stop signs instead of weaving through cars that are stopping for the stop sign and doing a rolling "stop" through the stop sign.
This means bicyclists signal lane changes instead of swerving into a lane already occupied by a car and they stay in the bicycle lanes when such are provided.
This means bicyclists stay between the marked edges of a lane instead of straddling the line and blocking TWO lanes of traffic.
This means that pedestrians have the right-of-way on sidewalks, and in crosswalks, jogging lanes, and parking lots.
This means bicyclists stop at traffic lights that are red and wait for the light to change green to cross instead of weaving through the stopped cars and then racing across the street against the light.
This means that bicyclists don't try to set speed records on public streets in neighborhoods. If their bicycles are capable of exceeding the posted speed limit is no reason for them to do so.
When I'm driving a car, not only do I obey all the traffic laws, I watch out for:
pedestrians
children playing in the street
children playing beside the street who might suddenly run into it
bicyclists
motorcyclists
animals running loose
and other hazards
I suggest bicyclists do the same.
That some motorists may not always yield as much space as bicyclists think they need or bicyclists may feel intimidated by the bulkier cars or that bicyclists and motorists are involved in accidents, even fatality accidents, is not sufficient reason for the bicyclist to stop obeying both common sense and traffic laws. Indeed, I would think it would be an even greater reason for bicyclists and motorists to work better at obeying traffic laws. Those laws are often designed to make us safer.
Bucchere (in the linked article above) posted in his blog that the moral of his story about plowing through the pedestrians and killing one was that cyclists should wear helmets. What about the pedestrian he killed because he couldn't be bothered to obey the traffic laws? I think the better moral of his story is that bicyclists must obey the traffic laws and yield to pedestrians.
Worse? Bucchere isn't the first to kill a pedestrian because he felt entitled while riding a bicycle, and sadly, he probably won't be the last.
