How unpopular is the Paul Ryan plan to end Medicare? Unpopular enough that one Republican is running against it. And running against the fact that it would preserve the cuts to Medicare Advantage that were included in the Affordable Care Act, those cuts that Republicans have been screaming about since 2009 and ran on in 2010.
In mailers to constituents, Rep. David McKinley (R-WV) echoes Democrats’ concerns about the House GOP budget, authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).

“Congressman McKinley recently voted against the 2012 budget passed by the House because of the plan’s negative impact on northern West Virginia seniors,” the mailers read. “The plan would privatize Medicare for future retirees, raise the retirement age and keep in place the Medicare cuts included in last year’s healthcare bill. The Congressional Budget Office determined the plan would nearly double out-of-pocket healthcare costs for future retirees.”

It's not like McKinley is from a particularly endangered district, either.

So if a Republican is running in a pretty safe district against his own party's cuts to Medicare, maybe it should be a major feature of Democrats' campaigns, starting from President Obama's campaign and on down the line.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

A democrat held this seat forever before losing the primary in 2010. OK a WV democrat is not  your typical democrat but medicare and SS are things you don't mess with there.

tell you what they are afraid you'll attack them with, they talk tough and then act like little crybabies when they get a taste of the crap they dish out, and nobody whines and cries faster than a conservative Republican who is being fairly criticized about his actual policy positions and stances or his or her parties actual policy positions and stances.

The GOP is scared shitless of having to defend the Paul Ryan Plan non-stop. They didn't just talk about it, most of them actually voted for it in either the House or the Senate Republican caucus. Look at how well Romney handled President Obama's executive order on deportations. Or that fool wingnut wanna-be VP Governor in Virginia handled being called "Governor Ultrasound".

This is why I spend so much time baffled by the Democratic Party. Instead of "Grand Bargains" and trying to negotiate in good faith with people who are clearly acting in bad faith, just pick up the sword they demand that you stay away from because only they get to be on the attack.

That asshole GOP Senate candidate and his 'don't talk about sob stories, about the poor and middle class struggling' in Wisconsin. There you go. Talk about the so-called sob stories and then point out that the GOP candidate wants to double down on making more of them.

The Right gives you directions on how to beat them and with what, then they whine and cry a lot when the heat is on.

hasn't hit Romney on Ryan's Medicare ending plan yet but perhaps they will in time.

Perhaps they are waiting until after SCOTUS rules on Obamacare to see what is left.

"maybe it should be a major feature of Democrats' campaigns. "  I don't understand why it hasn't been yet. Like I said before, the ad I would run is video of Republicans talking about ending social security and medicare. With a tag line, Vote Republican and end Social Security once and for all.

The only thing I can think of is that they'll start pushing it right before the republican convention and try to force the issue there.

McKinley won WV-01 by about 700 votes in the last election. Dems have a huge registration advantage in the district.

If you'd like to see McKinley defeated, check out Sue Thorn's campaign site, and maybe even make a donation!
