It has been confirmed by the office of Turkish PM Erdoğan that the F4 which went missing this morning was shot down by Syrian government forces.
It was shot down while flying at a low altitude over the Mediterranean Sea in Syrian territorial airspace and went down in the Mediterranean eight miles off the coast of Latakia, Syria.
Turkish media are reporting that the Syrian Ministry of Defense has released a statement confirming that Syrian forces shot down the aircraft after it had entered Syrian airspace and flown over Syrian territory, and that they did not realize that it was Turkish until after it had been shot down.
Reaction has been quiet. It seems to be understood by the people in Turkey that the F4 was in Syrian airspace.
Official reaction from the Turkish Government has been very muted and official information has been being released very slowly.
The two airmen, who had been reported to have been rescued by many media sources earlier today, have still not been rescued according to the Turkish government. Search and rescue operations by the Turkish and Syrian Air Forces and Navies are continuing.
