A group of Roman Catholic Sisters, calling themselves Nuns on the Bus, have hit the road on a nine State trip. They won't be rolling into the Fort Lauderdale area where I live. They won't be visiting Florida. But their message is as important for us as it is for the people in the States they will visit. Led by Sr. Simone Campbel, SSS and funded by Network, the Nuns on the Bus are protesting the cuts in the Ryan Budget. These cuts will affect seniors citizens, children, low income families and even small businesses with regard to providing health care for employees according to Sr. Simone and Network. The data provided on the web site is for the States the Sisters will visit, but every State will also suffer from the cuts. Families Usa lists the top five States within seniors enrolled in Medicaid and persons with disabilities enrolled in Medicaid. The Ryan budget proposes significant cuts in Medicaid.
Representative Ryan has stated that his budget is in line with Catholic Social teachings. The Sisters and the Catholic Bishops strongly disagree. As Catholics, we must remember the words of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel "When I was hungry, you fed me. When I was naked, you clothed me...." Words that call us to care for others and oppose Representative Ryan's attempts to harm those who are less fortunate and need assistance.
