This is a remarkable story that has received no attention by the media here. The new Libyan regime has arrested an Australian woman lawyer, who is official of the international crimes court for "spying".
From the link above:
Libya has accused the detained international criminal court lawyer Melinda Taylor of "blatant violations" and says she secretly smuggled spying devices and a coded letter to Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.
From the same link:
Taylor's friends and family, however, say that she is held in high regard professionally and would never have done anything improper. They suggest that some of the allegations against her may stem from a misunderstanding about privileged communications between a defence lawyer and her client, in which the exchange of documents and the recording of testimony is normal practice.
So lets get this straight. A lawyer taping her conversations with her client is arrested for using a tape recorder because a tape recorder is a "spying device"? Huh?
The ICC has stood by her official and has asked for her immediate release:
Taylor's detention has plunged the ICC into crisis: it is the first time in the court's 10-year history that one of its officials has been seized. On 15 June, the ICC called for the release of its team –
Amnesty International USA has
also called for the release of Melinda Taylor.
The Libyan regime should stop detaining and harassing a lawyer of the ICC court. Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor should be released immediately. There have been violations of human rights and war crimes in the post-Gaddafi Libya, raising questions of whether democracy will really work in this country, or a new Gaddafi-style dictatorship is emerging with different new rulers. Arresting an official of the ICC is unacceptable and shows a mentality similar to the previous regime. The world should demand that Melinda Taylor is freed immediately by the Libyan regime.
