How in the world can a state where Rick Scott was elected governor and where Republicans outnumber Democrats in the State House and Senate by 109 to 51, can President Obama be leading presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney in a major statewide poll? Sometimes my adopted state makes absolutely no sense.
The surprising news comes in the form of a Quinnipiac University poll, where Obama edges Romney, 45 percent to 41 percent. That poll also found that Obama leads among the key constituency of independent voters by a 44 percent to 37 percent margin.
Most of my friends and I were all but convinced that Florida was a lost cause for the President -- especially with all of the voter suppression BS going down. I've heard several pundits on TV say President Obama doesn't have a chance in Florida. His lead in this new poll, which is probably within the margin of error, certainly does not guarantee that he's going to take Florida, but I think we can safely assume that President Obama will be competitive here, as well as in other swing states that he carried in 2008. And I have to believe the more people see of Mitt Romney, the less they'll like him and the President's chances will get better and better -- even in a state like Florida, which I really see as a highly polarized red state as opposed to a true swing state.
But this poll shows there is hope! And please, Rod Serling, do not come out of the darkness proclaiming that we've entered The Twilight Zone.
Look out Rick Scott. The "Yes We Can Express" is coming directly at you and your boy Mitt.
