Mitt Romney, in video from a March 2006 press conference unearthed by American Bridge, delivering a ringing endorsement of the individual mandate ... and claiming credit for having proposed it in the first place:

With regards to the mandate, the individual responsibility program which I proposed, I was very pleased to see that the compromise from the two houses includes the personal responsibility principle, that is essential for bringing health care costs down for everyone, and for getting everybody the health insurance they deserve and need. So I was very pleased with that development.
Obviously, thanks to his tea party Republican masters, Mitt Romney is singing a different song today. But even though he says he's against it now, the individual mandate was his proposal in the first place. So no matter which way the Supreme Court rules today, Romney will be on the winning side. And the losing one too.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  I think it is good for us (12+ / 0-)

because in the video Mitt is talking. Whenever he talks, whatever he says, he comes off as a douche. People may not like Obama because he's black, but they are going to see Mitt as the dick he is, and they may just stay home. Nobody likes an asshole, even other racist assholes don't like someone like Mitt Romney. To me, the content where he talks about the mandate is not even why the video works. It's just because he talks in it.

  •  Please CREDIT me but NEVER BLAME ME (9+ / 0-)

@Jed, I see a pattern just like the auto bailout. Obviously, the difference being that Romney did enact the individual mandate but he can hardly take credit for that. Lots of conservatives advocated a mandate at least a full decade before Slick Willard claimed. If Al Gore had said one one hundredth of the lies Mendacious Mitt has, they would call Gore pathological.

So the pattern is only take credit for someone else's work but make sure to blame them. It's a perfect fit for Romney, dovetailing  his vampire capitalism with lemon socialism.

  •  You know.... (5+ / 0-)

sometimes when I hear Mitt speaking, I can't help but get the feeling that he's not always being consistent in his message.

I can't help but get the feeling that he's saying one thing on Wednesday, then saying something different on Friday.

I can't help but get the feeling that perhaps he's not being entirely honest with the voters about his positions on the issues.

I can't help but get he feeling that he's saying whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear so he can get their votes.

I can't help but get the feeling that he's being just a teensy bit dishonest in his public statements.

    That maybe he's being untruthful.

    That he's lying.

That he's a lying sack of crap.

That he's a lying sack of crap hellbent on smiling his way into office and then ripping off the mask and revealing that he's actually some sort of hell-beast or hostile alien bent on enslaving all humanity.

But I might be wrong on that....

I can't help but think Congressional Republicans are secretly hoping the ACA is saved in its entirety by SCOTUS.  That way they can keep raging against "Obamacare" without having actually to come up with an alternate solution.

If SCOTUS chucks it entirely, they own the healthcare problem like never before.  If it does away with the mandate only, teabaggers will still be restive.

Barack Obama is not a secret Marxist class warrior who wants to redistribute wealth in America. But I'll still vote for him, anyway.

With regards to the mandate, the individual responsibility program which I opposed, I was very pleased to see that the decree from the Supreme Court excludes the personal responsibility principle, that is essential for bringing health care costs up for everyone, and for ridding millions of Americans of the health insurance they deserve and need. to appear to be a walking throw back to another era. He makes me think of Howdy Doody- just kind of goofy and happy no matter what goes on around him.   But the thing that really puts him in another era mentally is that he continues to forget that we now have video tapes and can easily see what someone did on them.  I mean, how can you really operate anything if you forget to check up on what you said yesterday?  It's a wonder Bain did as well as it did.  Or maybe that's how big CEO's work- they all forget what they said yesterday and let each other get away with it.
