From Yahoo:

Michigan Republican Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, who launched a short-lived White House bid in 2011, announced Friday that he was resigning from Congress, citing personal family issues.
"After nearly 26 years in elected office, this past nightmarish month and a half have, for the first time, severed the necessary harmony between the needs of my constituency and of my family," McCotter said in a statement. "As this harmony is required to serve, its absence requires I leave."
Yes, He was fun loving... But it seems over the past couple months something happened..

Hope he gets well, and he and his family are OK and can manage the recovery.

(Yes, His views were wrong, but as a person, hope he is OK soon.. )

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

It is a shame that his family has to be affected by the fallout too though.

Little things like (alleged)  election fraud can cause some less-than-fun consequences:

WWJ’s Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports McCotter’s campaign turned in 2,000 petition signatures — but there was a problem.

“They found a grand total of 244 of those names to be valid. The rest were not,” said Skubick.

Skubick said, according to elections director Chris Thomas, that suggests that there may have been some “padding” going on.

The Secretary of State’s office said McCotter’s campaign may have used signatures gathered in 2010...

however his exit from office came about, I can't help but be glad for MI that it did come about.  After being represented by progressive Dems like William D. Ford and Lynn Rivers, people got McCotter's undermining of 30+ years of progressive gains.

for getting, by redistricting windfall, a district that had been well represented for 30+ years by liberal Democrats like William D. Ford

...an old-fashioned labor and lunch-pail liberal who served his working-class Michigan district in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years...Outspoken in his defense of everyday U.S. workers..."He was a protector of working people..."

Lynn earned a reputation as one of the most accessible and responsive elected officials in Michigan.
She always tried to represent the workers in Michigan:
Lynn was sensitized at an early age to the concerns of average working people. Her background prepared her to bring the voice of ordinary people to Congress.
Redistricting cost Michigan workers a Congress member that was willing to speak up and fight for them.  It's a shame that she has said that she won't run again.

The recent event's totality of calumnies, indignities and deceits have weighed most heavily upon my family. Thus, acutely aware one cannot rebuild their hearth of home amongst the ruins of their U.S. House office, for the sake of my loved ones I must "strike another match, go start anew" by embracing the promotion back from public servant to sovereign citizen.
"calumnies, indignities and deceits"--McCotter showed off his vocabulary right up to the very end.

Speaking of indignities, I walked in a 4th of July parade as one of the volunteers for Lisa Brown--yes, that Lisa Brown--and the people right behind us were the supporters of Bill Roberts, the LaRouche candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 11th CD.  Those guys were a freakshow.  Most of the mainstream Democrats didn't know what to make of them.  Fortunately, there is a serious mainstream Democrat in the race, Syed Taj.

The GOP side is even worse.  The only candidate on the ballot on the GOP side is a Tea Partier.  The Republican establishment is supporting a write-in candidate.  This race, which looked like it would have been boring a couple of months ago, now looks very entertaining.
